1.6 MPG what's yours??

  • K Guys, did a bit of a search on here but not returned much.

What MPG are you 1.6 guys getting?

My V6 was raping me at approx 25 mpg. I've sold her now but miss her dearly so have been considering the 1.6. If it's around 35 I think I could live with that.

Spotted a 1.6 near me for sale so that's what got me thinking.

Think it has Eunos wheels on it too. I wouldn't be paying asking for it though lol!!

    Cheers folks.

  • Mines rather poor, but that's because it's spilling oil everywhere at the moment. Even before it was spilling oil everywhere it wasn't that great either but I do have a heavy right foot. When I was doing 20 mile a day I was putting in around £40 a week in petrol (and that was before it was over £1.30). I wouldn't take mine as a bench mark as my engine needs a lot of work inside really-could do with a good old port and polish).

  • Jeez must be a lot of short journeys? I get over 30 on mine now if it's mainly motorway but with a fair bit of fun too.

Yes, it's probably hella worse now as I only live 3 miles from my work(so a 6 mile round trip) I make up for it though by going out on boredom drives that end up with me looking for corsas to annoy

  • I can get about 350 miles out of a full tank

  • @c407ecc6b8=youdirtyfox:

I can get about 350 miles out of a full tank

 That's about 150 more than I do, will be happy when Bert is all sorted out and none leaky, waht have I had so far? Air leak, electric leak, oil leak, cripes, when all is none leaky I'll be loaded!

  • I drive mine, 8 miles to work and 8 miles home and some running around so I get about 120 to a tank every week but motorway mileage I got it to 360 to a tank once

tyre pressure makes a big difference too, one of my rears was on 10psi
    for a while!

Ah yeah, had that problem for a while too meself, to be honest I miss going to the petrol station everyday to fill my tyres up

  • Mines a V6 but I was getting 180miles to 35 litres (dont like letting things get too low as was in the last quarter of the guage, plus that would be a friday to friday fill) after doing the oil, air filter, tps+iac adjust, ht leads and 4" zorst I get 240miles to the same amount of fuel, so oddly it seems tuning it a tad mustve brought back some performance, probably more that the spark is more efficient now. Ive fitted a decat too last week, but didnt fill up, so not sure how much that will have added/sapped from MPG, at the moment its looking like itll be minimal

**A friend of mine was a member of EcoModder, so I signed up for a laugh to track the fuel economy of my V6.

This is her log, but it's all in US mpg - the US gallon is 3.785 litres (3.785411784) and the Imperial gallon is 4.546 gallons. To convert you multiply by 1.20, so those stats read:

    Actual Fuel Economy Performance
    Lifetime - 33.73 mpg
    Last 3 tanks - 32.16 mpg
    90 days - 33.73 mpg**

  • Nice one for all the info guys. Much appreciated.

Some respectable mpg figures from you V6 guys. Wish mine gave that!

Even on a good motor way run between Cardiff and Bristol I only managed 28 mpg. That was resectable motor way speed with a fair strech of that at 50mph through the average speed camera bit in Newport.

I tried everything to get the mpg up on that car. Well serviced with the usuals. Changed the O2's and bought ditsy cap rotor and HT leads from Garfy which were practicly brand new. Can't even say the engine was bad as it ran sweet.
Even got to the point I thought is was the wheels as I swapped from stock and was running 195/45R15. Slightly smaller diameter so thought that would contribute, changed back to 205/55's but didn't make a noticable difference.

Looks like the 1.6's aren't far off from a decent V6 mpg.

Wich I could test a v6 for a week before I commited to buy!!!

  • Struth. Blocked cat maybe? I'm gonna decat my standard 1.8, see if the mpg goes up.

  • Ok so I did do a full fill and ran it all week, yesterday I filled up to the brim, 38.00 (didnt round it off, the pump clicked off at that) and Id got 274miles on the clock. 274 / 38 = 7.2 (miles to the litre) 7.2 x 4.54 (uk gallon) = 32.7mpg, so Ive gained 1mpg, which is negligable, so I wouldnt read into it.

So going decat has given me more power, nicer sound and cost me absolutely nothing in the way of additional fuel consumption. It may even be more than that if I hadnt been booting it everywhere because of the sound :) under calm and relaxed driving, Im sure 35mpg could be attained

The morale of the story then, tune your engine, get better mpg! From 23mpg when I bought the car to 32.7mpg after iridium plugs, kerr nelson ht leads, grounding kit, induction kit, decat, freeflow 4" zorst and T1R's all round at 30psi, thats just shy of a 50% improvement in fuel consumption, while also gaining 10-20 ponies! Guess Ill need to fit a turbo and intercooler to see if I can get 40+ lol

Edit: Castrol Magnatec 5w30 fully synth, K&N oil filter and 109k mile engine

  • My v6 is alot better on fuel than my old 1.6 auto witch surprised me the V6 dose 31.9 mph with over fueling problems

  • think i remember reading somewhere that the 1.6 mx-5's
over fuel as standard, dont know if its true of the mx-3's though?!

think you have more problems than just over fueling if thats all you can get out of it :P

  • it is good for a v6 just not on the pocket lol
