1.6 MPG what's yours??

  • @b6610d6af9=Mikey:

My V6 was raping me at approx 25 mpg. I've sold her now but miss her dearly so have been considering the 1.6. If it's around 35 I think I could live with that.

**A friend of mine was a member of EcoModder, so I signed up for a laugh to track the fuel economy of my V6.

This is her log, but it's all in US mpg - the US gallon is 3.785 litres (3.785411784) and the Imperial gallon is 4.546 gallons. To convert you multiply by 1.20, so those stats read:

    Actual Fuel Economy Performance
    Lifetime - 33.73 mpg
    Last 3 tanks - 32.16 mpg
    90 days - 33.73 mpg**

  • Nice one for all the info guys. Much appreciated.

Some respectable mpg figures from you V6 guys. Wish mine gave that!

Even on a good motor way run between Cardiff and Bristol I only managed 28 mpg. That was resectable motor way speed with a fair strech of that at 50mph through the average speed camera bit in Newport.

I tried everything to get the mpg up on that car. Well serviced with the usuals. Changed the O2's and bought ditsy cap rotor and HT leads from Garfy which were practicly brand new. Can't even say the engine was bad as it ran sweet.
Even got to the point I thought is was the wheels as I swapped from stock and was running 195/45R15. Slightly smaller diameter so thought that would contribute, changed back to 205/55's but didn't make a noticable difference.

Looks like the 1.6's aren't far off from a decent V6 mpg.

Wich I could test a v6 for a week before I commited to buy!!!

  • Struth. Blocked cat maybe? I'm gonna decat my standard 1.8, see if the mpg goes up.

  • Ok so I did do a full fill and ran it all week, yesterday I filled up to the brim, 38.00 (didnt round it off, the pump clicked off at that) and Id got 274miles on the clock. 274 / 38 = 7.2 (miles to the litre) 7.2 x 4.54 (uk gallon) = 32.7mpg, so Ive gained 1mpg, which is negligable, so I wouldnt read into it.

So going decat has given me more power, nicer sound and cost me absolutely nothing in the way of additional fuel consumption. It may even be more than that if I hadnt been booting it everywhere because of the sound :) under calm and relaxed driving, Im sure 35mpg could be attained

The morale of the story then, tune your engine, get better mpg! From 23mpg when I bought the car to 32.7mpg after iridium plugs, kerr nelson ht leads, grounding kit, induction kit, decat, freeflow 4" zorst and T1R's all round at 30psi, thats just shy of a 50% improvement in fuel consumption, while also gaining 10-20 ponies! Guess Ill need to fit a turbo and intercooler to see if I can get 40+ lol

Edit: Castrol Magnatec 5w30 fully synth, K&N oil filter and 109k mile engine

  • My v6 is alot better on fuel than my old 1.6 auto witch surprised me the V6 dose 31.9 mph with over fueling problems

  • think i remember reading somewhere that the 1.6 mx-5's
over fuel as standard, dont know if its true of the mx-3's though?!

  • @5344d282c0=jay:

the V6 dose 31.9 mph with over fueling problems

think you have more problems than just over fueling if thats all you can get out of it :P

Here's me thinking thats good for a v6, my ze is terrible! I know its overfuelling though…

  • it is good for a v6 just not on the pocket lol

  • think you missed my comments point, you put mph instead of mpg bud. Yeah for a V6 its real good, I dont think 30mpg for a 1.8car is bad be it v6 or i4, out of curiosity, whats the run down of bits/mods etc on your car and what fuel type you using? Im using regular, was using 99 but when prices hit £1.40 a litre I had to step back from that, Ive noticed a complete lack of smoking now as I had that problem after going decat, a week later i went to 95 and its stopped, guess if its overfueling anyway then the delayed burn of 99 wasnt amounting to much.

lol I can't believe put mph lol I was using high octane fuel.till fuel went up now just using totals normal fuel as for mods I've only got K&N filter , HKS plugs and sportex back box

  • whats your mileage?

  • @7e0cc2bb81=Jesta:

    whats your mileage?

    around 125000

  • hmm your engine bay and electricals must be in better condition than mine then, think the original ht's were still on it, cylinder 3 didnt even work when I resistance checked the lead for it, and the others were between 30-60k ohms, should be 5k per metre iirc. Still, I had to do a fair bit more to get where it is now, so yeah, guess yours is in better condition despite a 15k mile lead! Hats off to you sir

  • I'd say my MPG is extremely poor at the moment…......

Filled the tank up 2 weeks ago, done just over 200 miles and now needing a refill (oh and the tank was 1/4 full before I filled) I'd guess at 15mpg.

  • atleast your doing your bit to make england warmer :)
