DJMARCOPOLO'S - The GREEN RIVET

  • A couple of things to try before you pull it out…

    • Take out the dipstick and see if you get compression coming out.
    • Do the same with the oil filler cap
    • Do same with a breather pipe
    • Do a compression test mark down results
    • Drop a very small bit of oil down each sparkplug hole in turn and re-do compression test (the oil seals any gaps in the rings, so a big difference can indicate worn rings / cylinders)
    • If you find a difference you can confirm by doing a cylinder leakage test, if it shows a leak state then you just listen at the dipstick, filler cap and breather pipe in turn to confirm its the rings.

Is it only burning oil from cold startup? Could be stem seals?

A bit strange to blow out a new seal though, was it a good fit? Does the MX-3 have a crank breather pipe? (its been a while since i've worked on one LOL) Check to see its not collapsed, gone soft, got blocked etc and is working properly.

What is your oil pressure doing? Have you put new headgasket on? Did you use a KLZE one as the holes are not the same on K8 or KLDE ones, maybe a blocked off oil hole? Scrap that you would have more noticable problems, it probably would not run LOL just spamming ideas out of my brain as i'm in a real hurry.

    Hope you get it sorted.

  • Juts a quick note, hone the cylinders when your putting in new rings, make sure the gaps are opposite each other.

  • Gulfy - fidanza makes a very noticeable difference on pull away :)

Stem seals were all done with the head refurbish and if you notice on revving video it puffs a little on deceleration even when warm

the seal on the shaft was a tight fit, we took a week to find it as no-one stocks it but we found a company locally that could order it and matched the part numbers up. just wonder if we need to use some of that gasket glue on that part on the block side of the gasket
will try to do a proper compression test this weekend as a buddy has a compression tester kit and also the head set was a DE kit but all the channels etc seem to be a perfect marriage and our local place we get all out parts from didnt have any listings for ZE

Also gotta get the ze on some ramps next week as the sump has developed a drip on it now, going to VW dealership saturday as they sell the best sump sealer on the market, its not like a sealer but a paste that you put on, brlliant stuff and well recommended

    Lightweight bottom crank pulley

  • Am interested to see how the lightweight pully and the lightweight flywheel work in combo. Some say the combo is too much of a loss.

  • in what way ???

TBH its aluminium and steel plate its not a big saving on weight

  • Thats an 'underdrive' pully not just a lightweight pully its a different diameter.

Personally i don't like them, they just don't balance as good as the standard ones.

You can get better ones than the one you had pictured though.

  • That's the term under drive !. Sorry been a while since I researched them.
Some love them some don't!. Think marco used one with no problems.

    Just to confuse you.

Not trying to put a downer on your purchase just be sure your 100 confident it it's fitment before fitting.

Maybe start a convo on the mx3.com fb page and get some reviews from users

  • wow that conversation is a ball ache, will do the mx3.com chat first
    thanks garfy

  • You have to grind off some off the alloy block around where the pully goes, and some of the plastic cambelt cover to fit the underdrive pully and you need to buy a different length alternator belt (which probestore sell). I would also use a small amount of locktight on the pully bolt (not much though).

That underdrive pully you have looks like one of the cheap ones though, there is a couple of better quality ones you can get. I'd need to see a pic of the other side to know for sure what yours is.

    Here is the belt:

Some info on good vs bad pully:

You can tell if its an 'EBAY' one because its just a universal pulley with the trigger plate added to the back. You can visibly tell that the trigger plate is seperate to the pulley. On the good ones they are designed for the mx-3 and the trigger part is built in to the pulley. I can personally vouch for the fact that the cheap ones will come apart!! Mine lasted less than 1000 miles!!!

You can also get lightweight pulleys that are not also underdrive pulleys.

Here are some fitting pics to give you an idea whats involved:

  • ok it is a cheapy then, think ill leave it off lol
Thanks for your help guys :respect:

  • Took her out for a spin sunday as it was a nice day and it was booked for a promo shoot with some local club sponsors so a great day all round will pos some pics when they get released back to me :)

Anyway sitting in a garage hasnt been great and found some new things to do, passenger wheel arch liner is rubbing so I need to look at that and the power steering is properly intermittent on tick over, like almost nothing there yet with higher revs its fine, could be slightly damaged inside :(

  • Wow, that's a cool paint job. PROPS. :bigok:

  • thanks aaron

  • Had some good photos of mine taken recently so heres a few
