DJMARCOPOLO'S - The GREEN RIVET

  • busy evening today - engine now all timed up with covers on and she is all ready to go
Just a pic of the rockers before I started fitting everything

NOT LONG TIL SHE IS BACK ON THE ROAD :bigok: :bigok: :bigok:

Then she is all ready to go in her garage for the winter as I got the key yesterday :D

  • Engine finished - fitting is now september 28th

  • Nice one, is car going into storage all winter, or you planning some runs/meets? Bound to be some nice sunny days still left this year!

  • Any updates DJ?

  • Hi all, back again after our short online holiday lol

engine is back in and running but will be coming out again very soon
She runs like a dream and the lightened flywheel is just amazing but we have a major problem :x

The crank shaft oil seal I replaced seems to have blown out and its just chucking oil out the bell housing in a serious way, theres also signs of blue smoke and definately on start up so its possible the rings have gone and its back pressuring the engine a little causing the seal to come out

So engine out again very soon, going to fit hopefully a new set of rings right through and redo the whole bottom end to make sure :(

This winter it will be finished and then ive been discussion with the wife as its not a daily anymore the possbility of gutting the interior, then roll cage and buckets or custom fit an RX8 interior in there as it appears possible and they are very cheap to buy
Anyway ca is parked in its garage now covered in blankets so just waiting for a weekend me & my dad can get into it and whip this out again

heres some progress pics to show too

Also a video of first run i took can see the little amounts of white smoke i mentioned and the ticking has now gone and she purrs perfectly

  • That's a shame mate, you've made a nice job of everything, still you've got all winter to sort it out!!

So there is a lot of difference between k8 and fidenza flywheel? Keep up the good work DJ

  • A couple of things to try before you pull it out…

    • Take out the dipstick and see if you get compression coming out.
    • Do the same with the oil filler cap
    • Do same with a breather pipe
    • Do a compression test mark down results
    • Drop a very small bit of oil down each sparkplug hole in turn and re-do compression test (the oil seals any gaps in the rings, so a big difference can indicate worn rings / cylinders)
    • If you find a difference you can confirm by doing a cylinder leakage test, if it shows a leak state then you just listen at the dipstick, filler cap and breather pipe in turn to confirm its the rings.

Is it only burning oil from cold startup? Could be stem seals?

A bit strange to blow out a new seal though, was it a good fit? Does the MX-3 have a crank breather pipe? (its been a while since i've worked on one LOL) Check to see its not collapsed, gone soft, got blocked etc and is working properly.

What is your oil pressure doing? Have you put new headgasket on? Did you use a KLZE one as the holes are not the same on K8 or KLDE ones, maybe a blocked off oil hole? Scrap that you would have more noticable problems, it probably would not run LOL just spamming ideas out of my brain as i'm in a real hurry.

    Hope you get it sorted.

  • Juts a quick note, hone the cylinders when your putting in new rings, make sure the gaps are opposite each other.

  • Gulfy - fidanza makes a very noticeable difference on pull away :)

Stem seals were all done with the head refurbish and if you notice on revving video it puffs a little on deceleration even when warm

the seal on the shaft was a tight fit, we took a week to find it as no-one stocks it but we found a company locally that could order it and matched the part numbers up. just wonder if we need to use some of that gasket glue on that part on the block side of the gasket
will try to do a proper compression test this weekend as a buddy has a compression tester kit and also the head set was a DE kit but all the channels etc seem to be a perfect marriage and our local place we get all out parts from didnt have any listings for ZE

  • PROJECT GREEN RIVET IS BACK ON THE ROAD

GOT TO SORT A DODGY LOADCELL ON THE REAR N/S INDICATOR AND ONE HEADLIGHT IS OUT FOR NO APPARENT REASON

TOOK HER FOR A DRIVE AND SHE STONKS ALONG WITH THAT FIDANZA FLYWEEL NOW

1st OUTING IS THE HUGE STAPLES MEET IN SOUTHAMPTON 1st DECEMBER

ALSO FEATURED IN THE HASHIRIYA SHOWS MODIFIED CALENDER FOR 2014

    SO LOOKING GOOD NOW :bigok:

  • Good news

  • thanks gulfy, when will yours be on the road again, we need to get a few of us together again 8)

  • Its in outside storage at the moment, hope to get it around to my unit within the next week, few bits to sort out before MOT, its looking a sorry state :(

  • thats a shame, lets hope you get her on the road again

  • Big thanks to Lori for some new car porn today
    absolutely love it :bigok:

Also gotta get the ze on some ramps next week as the sump has developed a drip on it now, going to VW dealership saturday as they sell the best sump sealer on the market, its not like a sealer but a paste that you put on, brlliant stuff and well recommended

    Lightweight bottom crank pulley

  • Am interested to see how the lightweight pully and the lightweight flywheel work in combo. Some say the combo is too much of a loss.

  • in what way ???

TBH its aluminium and steel plate its not a big saving on weight

  • Thats an 'underdrive' pully not just a lightweight pully its a different diameter.

Personally i don't like them, they just don't balance as good as the standard ones.

You can get better ones than the one you had pictured though.

  • That's the term under drive !. Sorry been a while since I researched them.
Some love them some don't!. Think marco used one with no problems.

    Just to confuse you.

Not trying to put a downer on your purchase just be sure your 100 confident it it's fitment before fitting.

Maybe start a convo on the mx3.com fb page and get some reviews from users
