How do i fit cv joint?

  • hi,
could some one give me a link or a quick guide to changing the cv joint please.
    thanks in advance

  • the online manuals on mx-3.com should take care of it :)

quick guide off the top of my head, accuracy may not be a feature:

    -jack up front of car
    -take wheel off
    -knock out hub nut notch
-get hub nut off with 32mm? socket & impact gun or breaker bar + extension bar (i used scaffolding pole). You'll need someone to hold the brakes hard
-drop ball joint via 12/14mm bolt
-pull hub towards firewall and secure out of the way
    -pull axle out of hub
-take boot clip off intermediate shaft
    -pull half shaft out
-whack the old CV off, I tapped lightly with a hammer whilst holding the axle
    -put boot around half shaft/axle
-put the new clip on the axle
-slide axle into CV (I had packed grease before this, not sure if it's easier after). I had a nightmare getting the shaft back in, had to gave the clip a little streamline sanding with dremel, but so far so good
-reassemble to int shaft replacing any lost grease at intermediate shaft end.
    -Tighten band clips
    -insert into hub
    -hand tighten new hub nut
-Give it a test spin by hand
    -attach balljoint
-torque BJ and hub nut to spec
    -hammer notch into hub nut
    -wheel on etc

despite the effort of me typing that, I suggest you use the manual

    thank you very much marco.

you think im better off just paying the garage 25 quid?
i can do this but dont like the sounds of messing with that drive shaft and having my car sit a few days if i mess it up.

i guess i will need a new ball joint bolt as mine is real manky.

how do i tell which shaft as gone?its crunching on 1/4 to 1/2 lock to the left.
thanks again marco i really appreciate your time mate

  • swearing and shouting at it makes it alot easier :)

  • i snapped my power bar doing this!!!! as well as ending up smashing up the old joint whilst getting it off!!! and as said getting the new one over the split ring is quite a BI*CH. but a need to make sure the shaft does not pop out. all i can say good luck

ps i budget for 2 hours max. but ended up 4 doing mine. 20 cigs and 4 flasks of coffee!
