Replacement door speakers

  • Hi guys,

any idea where I can get replacement door speakers for my new (badly sounding) '97 mx-3?

Seems they are VERY shallow. Looking for a better speaker if possible!

    Cheers
    Mark :D

  • You can get adapters ordered from halfords for £10 which will include plastic housing to fit standard 13cm speakers and a cable adapter (for 323 not mx3) but snipping and re-crimping two cables isn't hard.
Plastic housing also has a shield around the top of the back of the cone to protect from leaky windows.
I just bought and fitted a pair of fusion "encounter" speakers (separates with crossovers) in the front of mine, £40 for the pair. May upload pictures of positioning of tweeters and crossovers if anyone wants.
They have nice sound quality and I love having the tweeters separate since you can't hear treble with your ankles! but don't be fooled by the claimed 180W on the box, mine start to clip at about 35w per channel (140W complete) (may be head unit tho)

  • thanks Bellers - would be very interested to see the pics. Are these the speakers? http://www.2modified.com/fusion-encounter-shallow-13cm-coaxial-speakers-p-11386.html.

  • No not those, similar tho.
They're separates as I said so I have the tweeters in the corners of the windscreen and woofers in stock positions.
I'll see if I can get a couple of photos up over the weekend.

  • mate, i didnt use adapters in mine… you can just drill some new holes with a 3mm drill bit and use self tappers...

  • Thanks rsroadkilla for the tip.

The problem I have is that the original speakers are very shallow and a deeper speaker I tried stops the window fully opening. Maybe i'm missing something but those fusions look much too deep. :?

  • Got some Kenwood's for ours.

if they fits a different story though haha.

  • There really should be a section on this forum for Audio me thinks!

  • infinity all round and fli

  • i bought some alpine speakers, and just drilled holes in where needed, what about back speakers to go in the original place?
    Any ideas

  • My front speakers are Alpine too, because i could only find Alpine with thin speakers. Or else they would touch the glass when the window is down

  • mine were the same… but i just made up an mdf ring out of 6mm and it sorted the problem :)

  • Thanks guys for your help. OutlaW666 - can you remember which model of speaker they were? If they do the job I'll just get a pair of these - hate to be a copycat but…

  • Im at work. When i reach home later today, ill see and post

  • i got some adaptors shipped from ebay USA for £7 they have done the job for me my pioneers fit them perfectly and the window goes right down too.

  • I'll take a look cheers!

  • Here it is :

  • Sorry it took me a while but here are the pics.
    Here are the tweeters

    One of the drivers:

Crossovers mounted between seat and door sill, once I attach them to the carpet there should be enough clearance for the seat to move fully forward to backwards without touching the crossover at all:

Hole behind driver (just to show that the window does cover this hole when fully opened) however this has not interfered with the speakers at all):

Depth of driver with the adaptor ring fitted (I was very impressed to find that the adaptors have the shielding around the tops of the speakers to protect against leaky windows):

Overall I'm impressed with these speakers. They have highlighted parts of my music which have been poorly ripped which I hadn't noticed with any of my other speakers. The only thing to mention is that they will ne top be paired with 6x9s or a sub of some description since they don't seem to have much bass to them.
Still for £40 with crossovers, I'm not complaining!

  • Bellers - you're a star - great pics! Separate tweeters - interesting.

Looks like I've got a choice to make

Next thing then are the rears :?

    Maybe a sub…

  • I love the separates, the treble is so much more pronounced. I have a spare pair of crossovers so I would love to get separates in the back too but they're harder to find. I'd hate to see the crossovers go to waste tho! Also thinking about getting a little sub. Nothing too offensive, I don't want to make a competition with anyone, I just want a nice fuller sound for me to enjoy.
