DJMARCOPOLO'S - The GREEN RIVET

  • Unlucky mate. Sounds like loose crank pulley bolt to me too. The outer ring can separate too. Get sorted for replacement? Have a few here.

The wrap job looks very well done! Hope you get sorted soon:-)

  • Hiya Kev, thanks for the offer I wouldnt like to know when I would get another but as usual marco has come to the rescue :bigok:

    Thanks Marc :D

  • Waterpump was only fitted once, I always put a bit of red high temp gasket sealer on waterpumps, its pretty good stuff as it goes to 350 degrees C.

  • Hiya daryl, with the red hermatite and the way the gasket was very dry square it loked like it had been refitted and after all this time it was that that was leaking, I never checked it as you had done it all not long before I bought the engine but glad that is all sorted now, just bottom pulley to do and she is back on track :bigok:

  • BAD BAD BAD !!!
Had a fantastic weekend at modified national car show, couldn't believe the amount of people taking photos and the great time I had with my local hashiriya club mates. Left at lunchtime with someone following as they didn't know the way home and everything was fine and didn't fancy flooring it so had a gentle pootle back at 65 mph

Came off a roundabout on the a1 and the car felt a little sluggish pulling away but didn't think anything of it. Drove fine to the M1 then accelerated onto the motorway and it sounded very raw and throaty then massive amount of tappet rattle and knocking and the engine died. Pulled onto the hard shoulder and tried to restart and the engine was seized it wouldn't turn over. Opened bonnet and the engine was too hot to touch the water was boiling in the pipes and the pipes were extremely swollen. Pulled the dipstick out and no oil in it, there's no oil leaks and none in the engine bay at all

so the guess is a piston has shit itself and sucked the oil up the side of the rings and burnt it causing the sluggish feeling up to the point that it ran out of oil and seized at 70mph

Anyway i had a spare bottle of oil so tipped that in and let the engine cool then when it was cool I turned it over and surprisingly it started again, it is rough as hell and one valve on the rear is banging on something badly and it seems to have piston slap or a heavy knock in the bottom

  • Are you sure you haven't overheated and blown head gasket losing oil and water? Slapping perhaps rod knock after oil loss and spun bearing.

  • Oh dear :( Sorry to hear that fella :x

Think if youd 'holed' a piston or 'broke' a ring the following 'friends' would have reported a 'red arrows style' smoke trail which Im sure you'd have noticed in your rear veiw????

Unfortunately sounds like 'OIL STARVATION' to me?????

When did you last check oil level? Honestly?

The sluggish feeling could have been Knock sensor trying to do its job??? or the beginning of friction welding of engine components? :(

Very suprised it restarted when cooled??/ I'd fear the worst as regards its future as a powerplant! :( Feel for ya dj really do x kev b.

  • there is something not right and the oil has gone somewhere, oil and water was checked before leaving and was spot on and it never loses oil

Looks like a new ZE or a klde with the heads fitted, gonna rip it out this week if the weather is any good

  • @a851419ad9=Marco:

Are you sure you haven't overheated and blown head gasket losing oil and water? Slapping perhaps rod knock after oil loss and spun bearing.

the car didnt seem to over heat, the temp was all ok until it died, the thermostat is still missing so it doesnt run hot anyway, when I pulled onto the motorway it didnt sound right it was very rough raw exhaust note then it just went very quickly after that which is what I cannot understand, I can only guess where the oil went and my friend behind didnt see any smoke, there is no sign of oil leak and the water is perfectly fine and hasnt lost a drop since the cambelt and pump last week and there is no oil in there either

its coming out anyway and either being replaced or full rebuild now if the bores arent damaged.

Just doesnt add up at all, especially as its starts and runs even though its noisy as hell and has some massive rattles

  • Anyway forget that crap for now
heres some pics I found on facebook of the car

  • Sweet ride on the last pic….... and the car is nice too!

    Funny aren't i lol

    Bad news though..... Sorry pal

  • Well i have until 2 august to fix before ultimate steet car

the real odd thing is that the same thing has happened to chris's yellow supra on the right of the 2nd to last pic and he is now having it towed back from northampton currently after the traffic wardens attacked it too, dunno if theres been some overnight tampering :x

  • Such a shame! as 'Corkin' looking '3' (still think it looks like a snake from front

Did you have green snake eyes on lights in 'wraptition' pic????

Theres nowhere for nigh on 4.5l of oil to go other than on tarmac or down exhaust??????? V strange indeed :? Holed sump? Have you checked for a v glossy undercarriage????

Looks like you have a plan Stan? hope ya get it sorted for next show, be a shame to deprive the visitors that amazing photo opportunity :D

    kev b.

  • this fault is very strange

have full water with new pump fitted with great flow, some oil is back in the engine and it runs and ticks over fine with no smoke just the rear bank the valves sound like they are banging the crap out of the rocker covers so there is definate valve or cam damage mainly in the middle cylinder

Our next guess now is maybe the oil pick up tube is blocked to the rear bank or the water jacket on the rear bank is blocked causing the damage to the rear, it kind of explains why there is no smoke and why it possibly seized until it cooled down, if its block oil tube that would explain why the oil was low as it was stuck up the top and my dad had the same thing n a skoda octavia last year that did almost the same

anyway new ZE on order and in post next week and waiting for better weather to start stripping this puppy down

  • Would be nice to see what caused it DJ.

Glad to hear you have another ZE on the way!

  • Good to hear things are slowly getting back on track, who's ze have you picked up ?.

  • barrywhites :respect:

  • Mmmmm :( V strange indeed!
Iirc on K series engines there is only a single pickup tube with a strainer on the end submerged in the sump, the crank driven oilpump 'sucks' oil through the strainer then as it passes through pump gears, positive pressure then pumps oil through the filter straight to the crank main bearings and 'big ends' and then on through drillings in the block/heads up to the 'hollow' cams via the drilled cam carrier bearings/brackets, suprisingly the HLA's are not fed oil via any drillings, they are cooled and fed oil via a small 'well' which they sit in which relys on the overflow oil from the cam carrier bearings to lubricate them?

Youre probably spot on in saying a cam feed drilling (tube?) is blocked causing oil starvation and damage to cam components and hence 'CLATTER' but it would NOT cause 4 or so litres of oil to collect in cam covers as the draindown ports in there are Huuuuge! and a couple per bank?

Its the 'OIL VANISHING ACT' thats very strange and a worry

Has anyone fitted a mechanical oil pressure gauge to a K series?? my father swears by em on anything other than a standard engine!!! he says " its ok having a 'low pressure' light on ya dash, but if it comes on at 6000rpm, all it'll tell you is 'DAMAGE DONE'!!!! a gauge is a live veiw of whats occuring second by second".
He reckons "you get to know what the needle should be doing and if it displays any thing un-toward you 'may' get a second chance?"

Hope youll get chance to do an autopsy on it dj ? and report your findings,
I for one would be interested in that
    :)
Meanwhile hope ya replacement is a JOY :D

    kev b.

  • The mx6 guys used to always put oil pressure gauges in their motors as they weren't convinced that the mazda oil warning light kicks in quick enough to save the engine. Not sure how its all plumbed in tho.
