Sooty 2.0 - Autozam AZ-3 B5ZE - rear bumper respray

  • Did a bit more sand fill prime today. Still got more to go. Getting those edges flat but curved is the worst bit.

Anyway, whilst waiting between drying I familiarised myself with the engine more.

    B6S7 Cams

    B551-7 Head

Looks like a BP valve cover… yet smaller!

    B6 Pattern exhaust studs

Heads look pretty clean, mileage seems believable! I'm going to change the valve cover gasket after I clean up the valve cover. I'm impressed by the chromed bolts as standard! Next up oil change.

  • I did find a whole history somewhere online of the AZ-3 will try to find it, mazda decided to put the B6 head on an older 1.5 block but gave it a larger induction system and modded a whole load of other parts in the head and called it the B6ZE and its only available on autozam AZ-3's

  • B6ZE was developed for the Miata I thought and a 1600?!

  • Where do you find these things DJ!? That'd be cool to read :-)

    B5ZE I think he means.

  • oOH interesting, look forward to the read also!

  • Same :)

  • It was a couple of years ago, they fitted the B5ZE to the ford laser in japan only too, it was a mash up of the older b5 block and b6 head but god knows where I read it all, theres a few bits on wiki but I read a whole thing about them somewhere

  • I have another B5ZE here if anyone wants it :bigok:

    Car or block?

  • Block and box, still in the car. Just a parts car now. In saying that, would probably be cheaper to fly over, buy a full one and drive it back rather than have me try ship this one :p

  • No worries, I've got the old K8 block of mine to take apart and see how it all works and stuff :)

  • Done for now! That was some ordeal. Bodywork is so slow. I'm happy enough. I can't really find the weld anymore :)

    BEFORE:

    AFTER:

Both of these have been tackled now, pics to follow, new setup:

-x2 new ball joints (boots were destroyed)
-x2 new tie rod ends (boots were destroyed)
-mazda 323f BA lantis v6 spindles
-mazda 323f BA lantis v6 5 stud hubs
-mazda 323f BA lantis v6 brakes and discs
    -goodridge SS brake lines

  • Looks perfect!!Very good finish! :bigok:

  • Beautiful job, Marc. Fancy welding sills on my 7? :D

  • Thanks guys!

Haha well you're bit far and I'm crap at TIG welding upside down  need a good MIG for that :-)

  • Sterling work sir on that antenna 8)

  • Thanks Sam :)

Had the dash apart today, fitted a MPH overlay over the clocks, bit of a temp solution but it will hopefully suffice for MOT.

Windscreen replacement is booked for Monday afternoon. An unfortunate and unexpected expense :( It'll be nice to have a shiny new one fitted though.

  • I was just thinking windscreen today. How nice it would to have a nice crystal clear view again, especially with my mono wipe.

Dood I got to do some MIG body filling at some point will shoot you a PM.

Great to see you crackin' on, whens MOT?

  • Yea its been fairly fast paced this project! Helps having most parts already haha. Mot isn't booked yet, have to phone up and book it via the VIN as its not registered in UK yet! Nothing achieved today - too damn wet! Yea nice new windscreen shall be lovely.

  • Today I swapped the front bumper over. Pics to follow.

Unfortunately discovered evidence of crash damage. The passenger side is a bit out of alignment around the headlight, nothing chronic, but a bit disappointing. Hopefully I can beat it true, it will do for now!

Looks much better for having glass headlights, mint sidelights and a straight bumper :)
