Klde swap questions

  • hi guys i have read through plenty of posts regarding this, but my question is what stuff do i actually need to do it

i intend on buying a donor mx6 for it

but is it just swap the engine over?

are all plugs pretty much the same or does anyone have a idiots guide to doing it??

    sorry for stupid questions

    jamie

  • It is pretty much a straight swap all connectors are the same

    You will need to..
Move the battery to the boot or get a short neck inlet manifold
repipe the vacuum pipes at the back of the engine
bend the strut brace a little bit
Get all the engine mounts toughened before refitting ( fill them with sikaflex )
Put a new uprated clutch in

Thats pretty much it, its a straight swap

but recommended is do a major service on the engine first including cambelt and the CV joints can go now that it has a stack more torque through it

UK spec mx6's are all short neck manifolds (to my knowledge) so no need to move the battery ;)

  • cheers for the info guys.

my 3 is a 98 model so that wont cause any issues either will it?

and is the ecu from the 6 plug in??

  • no mate! seriously i wouldnt even attempt it. the chances are your car is OBD2. you need to have an OBD1 car to do the swap, otherwise its a no go im afraid. anything pre '94 is obd1 and usually (with the odd exception) anything newer is obd2. My old 96 was obd1 but its the luck of the draw.

to check remove the flap in the passenger footwell attached to the centre consol to reveal the ECU. OBD1 has 3 yellow connectors, OBD2 has 4 yellow connectors. i wouldnt get your hopes up mate,
sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

  • It's not as easy. Daryll had a lot of trouble with it. I'd like to try it myself, but both cars I swapped were late 95 and 3 plug aka 'OBDI'.

Swap the wiring harness with it and I guess all will be as normal!

I think that is true but believe it would be a right bitch of a job.

  • also, sorry to hijack, but marco, did they make any obd2 mx6's/probes in the UK. if so why wouldnt it be possible to swap an obd2 mx6 engine into an obd2 mx3?

  • cheers again for the info.

will probably find a way of doing it. just guess it will be more of a bitch to do.

get as many diagrams of wiring etc to try and work it out and go from there
