What mileage do you get with one tank of fuel?

  • I'm really not happy with the mileage I get out of my 1.6-MX3 and am wondering if those numbers I see are normal.

Basically I get around 200 miles out of 35l which is about 26mpg. That is for mixed use - if I only use the car to drive to work it is worse (filled the car up this morning and with the miles done since last filling up I get to about 21mpg).

Since I am looking into getting a V6 next year I am concerned that it will be even worse and the numbers I see are normal. So please: Let me know what mileage you get out of a tank full of fuel for your 1.6/1.8. Thanks!

  • I get similar results from my V6.. mostly urban driving to and from work.. longer runs are better except on the M6 (might as well be driving in town on that motorway)

  • Out of my 1600 I get around 300 miles to a full tank probably a bit more if I drive really sensibly> Thats non motorway miles.

  • i get 160 miles a tank out of my V6 atm but i cant get my bloody o2 sensors out to change them GRRR I am hoping this is my problem as i am getting tired of looking now

Jeez that sux! Have you tried to remove the o2 sensor when the exhaust is hot?

  • I rarely get a full tank, though on my 1.8 last one I got 34mpg.

The scrap car actually got 38mpg driving from exeter to stranraer. Despite the cracked chassis and pulling to the side all the time.

  • my old V6 engine I managed to do southampton to dublin on one tank on the motorway via pembroke - 420 miles

I used to get 260 -300 a tank around town

Sling in a KLZE and shed load of mods, I am happy with 200 miles from a tank lol
currently getting 4 miles to the pound, that drops to 160-170 around town on a tank but I love driving it and the bottom of the accelerator peddle is now shiny

Just remember to look at the fuel prices, if there is something you want to do with a car, do it in the next 5 years because soon prices will start to reach out of our hands and the country will be like vietnam with all the mopeds.

not yet, i always thought you had to do it when they were cold due to the expansion of the metal

  • With a bit of luck the boss around the 02 sensor will expand when its hot loosening it's grip around it.
Also unplug it and slide a ring spanner over it if you havent done that before taht is.

  • 270-300 from a tank (v6) but with a reek of petrol around the car I may have a small leak somewhere… ooops

what size is it, i was using an adjustable wrench lol. is there any way to clean them other than petrol? could i not just clear the soot off with a toothbrush (outside obviously, i wouldnt touch the inside and destroy the sensor)

  • sorry dont know size. You cant clean them its a roasted on carbon buildup and the sensing part is on the inside anyway protected by heatsheilds, so best to replace.

  • bollocks lol they dont come cheap

  • Ed have you found that leak yet ????

Dan, easy way out, buy a manifold/down pipe from a scrap car with the sensors still in, If I had that black one still I would have saved it for you as the sensors were in that one

Also there is an sensor removing tool out there to buy
This set is a bit expensive but you get a lot more purchase on them to remove them as the ratchet fitting is offset
You maybe able to hire the set somewhere

  • found the socket on its own, just make sure its correct for the set you have and will fit the sensor

Just run the engine for a few mins to get some heat into it then use the tool, should come out then

  • My 98 R V6 gets on average 330-350 per tank, consists of urban 15 miles cold start trips each way to work 5 times a week and maybe 50 - 150 miles of A road and general knocking about at weekends. Tend to drive normal most of the time with a occasional prod and venture 4k rpm upwards a couple times of the week. It averages out at 32-33 MPG but will take a nodse dive to 30ish this winter I guess.

  • Seriously 300 miles on a 35 litre tank? Mine does between 200 and 240 which I find quite annoying as I'm sure a slightly bigger tank wouldn't encroach too much and 10kg's more weight is neither here nor there.

  • i thought we had a 50 litre tank? I must be misinformed, never let it get that low lol

  • My V6 has a 50 litre tank (11 gallons) and it confirms that in the manual.

  • Hmm - I usually fill my car up once it shows empty (gauge on low) - but have no idea how much is left in the tank at that point. I usually fill up around 35 liters - which means the initially mentioned 200 miles are per 35 liters (as I then reset the counter).
