Mx-3 1993 engine swap

  • Hey everyone.
Sorry if there was a post like that before, but I just couldn't find it.
    So, will a 1.8 L K8 V6 DOHC (1991) engine fit in to 1.6 Mazda mx-3 (1993)?

  • I think the looms are different mate, although i cannot confirm this as i have never seen a 1.6 loom. i am sure someone else will verify or not. if it is the same loom dont put a 1.8 in it. put a 2.5 in it from a probe or mx6 ;) the 1.8 just isnt fast enough

Thanks for the answer. ;) There's one guy who sells a cheap, bit crashed mx-3 with an 1.8 engine, thats why I'm interested in engine swap :)

  • You would need to change the Loom+ECU, other things you might want to look at are the brakes, as I'm not sure if they will be different.

The 1.8's are cheep enough, just buy one, it will save you time and cash in the long run.

I am guessing from the '92 in the name that the insurance would kill him on a V6 lol, he is probably doing what i would which is change engine and not change docs

  • Very true, but if anything were to happen and the police get involved… it won't be the insurance that will kill him, it will be the Judge.

Imo, nothing like that could hapeen in my country :D
All i would need to do is just go to the car register and change the car's ''passport'' because of the engine swap.

  • Go for it then bud :)

I should look at the location more lol.

Yea, but I want to be 99% sure, that the 1.8 engine will fit without any difficult problems

  • Can't put a 1.8 into a 1.6 without changing loom

  • Its a lot of work 1.6 - 1.8

The engine, gearbox, driveshafts, hubs, CV joints and bearings are all different
The engine mounts are located differently so you would have to custom fit new mounts in for the V6
Pipe work for power steering ( and aircon) are different as the are in different locations on the 1.6
All the wiring from the ECU to the engine has to be removed and swapped

Thats just the bits I know of.

Either buy a V6 or come to the uk and buy a cheapy V6 for £400 drive it back and just swap the documents or register it over there or get the same colour as your 1.6 and just change the plates over and drive it like that

Anything is possible depends how much you want to do to get it

Ah well, I guess I'll just keep my 1.6 engine then :S Sounds too difficult and that needs a lot of time :(

BTW, are there any other ways to improve the 1.6 performance ?

Not without spending a few quid but do a bit of reading on MX-3.com. Looking at the pics in your worklog you've got the earlier 88 bhp 1.6 so a swap to the later DOHC B6 would give you an extra 20 or so horsies.

A 1.8 BP swap from a 323 GT would probably be your best bet. 130 bhp stock and I believe it's a straightforward swap if you have an early 4-cyl MX like yours.

Could you not just buy a V6 MX3?

I'm a student atm, so I can't afford now to buy another car and it will take a while to sell this one too. But I'll figure out something.

BTW, I also asked this question on the Canadian mx-3 forums, they said that the 1.8 could fit the 1993 mx-3.

  • the engine itself will fit in the car no probs but its the whole wiring of the car that is different. you would have to strip both cars almost completely and use the entire loom from the 1.8 V6 and ECU. Its alot of work and if it was me I would out a 2.5 in there if you are going to do all that. as DJ said, you will need alot of bits from the V6 car as doner parts, such as driveshafts, break disks etc. it would be alot easier to buy a 1.8 V6 mate

  • If you want to up your bhp on a budget with a 1.6, just find an original japanese import AZ-3 1.5, the engine in there is a B6ZE it has the same mods as a the V6 ZE better designed heads and cams etc and a much bigger inlet manifold
The head itself is from a 1.6 but fitted to an older 323 1.5 block, just swap the heads over and its a noticable 20bhp more, especially with a decent induction kit and better exhaust you could get it up to the same as a bulk standard V6

  • Thanks for the advices, but I'm not really sure if it will be possible to find AZ-3 with the 1.5 engine in my country. Mostly people sell here mx's with 1.6 sohc, 1.6 dohc or with 1.8 v6. ;)
btw, I was planning to buy the whole car with the 1.8 as a donor. It has a cheap price, but Im not really sure now if im going to do that now.

  • Reviving the topic from last year.
I've been looking at a few 323 turbe engines online atm. possibly a bit pricey but would be a lot cheaper than the turbo conversion. How easily could that be swapped?
P.S yes i know it would be easier to just buy a v6 so the next time i see a black v6 for sale cheap when i am in a position to buy (i.e not paying for a wedding) i might think about it.

  • Well its a proven route so many many topics on this on .com
Just a matter of being well researched and prepped ready…
Engine swaps are pretty easing really on difference with this
is sorting out intercooler placement and pipework and you might
want the wiring loom and ECU aswell.

Any second hand Engine might require a rebuild and parts though?! which would push up costs. Unless you find a low miler :D

    P.s why would you want a V6 when you can get 250bhp+ out of a 1.8 16valve 323 turbo lump?! :P
