Smoke!

  • I also broke one of the vacuum pipes ( i think it is anyway) near the middle plug at the back of the engine when i was changing my leads. could this have anything to do with it ie loss of power etc

  • @7ae74c352e=daniel:

yeah i think i know what pipe you are on about. has a bung holding it into the rocker. mine is very loose. i pulled it out the other day by accident lol. yeah i remember that bit of bling he had under there lol, looked pretty good too

You need to make sure all of that has a good seal as that can cause bad running

ah crap, guess i need a new pcv valve the lol

  • All the vac pipes have to have a good seal, otherwise it WILL run poo!. Its probably over fueling hence smoke!, get on probestore.co.uk and get cracking!! :D

  • i actually snapped the plastic piece that the pipe attaches too though :? and its flush. am i able to get something (maybe a thin screwdriver or long nose pliers) to pull this out?

  • Can u put a pic on so we can see bud, i replaced the pcv on mine and the rubber gromit had gone hard and cracked so i replaced that too, it only cost about £15 on fordprobestore :D

  • yeah no probs, I am guessing that this is the valve, which as you all can see is very loose

and this is the vac pipe which i have now magically reattached

Still getting some hesitation even with it reattached but the smoke seems to have died down some.

  • anyone figured out a way to stop the over fueling besides getting a remap?

  • ok, i have figured out that my engine is only hesitating now when it is cold or first started. once it is warm it runs like a beauty but when cold it is really struggling to accelerate. any ideas? i thought it was the MAF but it wouldnt go away if that was th problem. when cold at about 4k i get a right kick in the back as it starts to use its full power (sometimes)

  • hold on a sec, you have an mx3 now?

    does your bac work?

sounds like a lean condition, which can be caused by a vacuum leak, manky air filter, bad throttle setup, bad/incorrect tps readings, low fuel line pressure (check fuel filter, pump and regulator) or a hang up in the VRIS sys as I believe that engages at 2.5k

  • yes mate back in a 3. got a project in the log :D i think there might be another vac leak as it sounds very hissy from the front end but where to start looking lol. so many pipes hidden under the bonnet.

Its kind of annoying as there is a VTS saxo that i see every morning on my way to work and because of the lag he manages to smoke me lol. its embarassing

  • Ive got massive hiss too, cant find anything though, so not sure if its just the sound of whirling air inside the manifold, discovered today that I have no oil left in my engine, did an oil change 4k miles ago, and just put in 3 full litres to get it to the full on the dipstick! Think that explains what my smoke problem is, but now I need to know why Im burning oil

  • if its hissing its drawing air on the inlet, I found the little panel on top of the inlet manifold just suddenly went and made a hole in the gasket, just a gasket sealer and refit sorted it, do find it though or it will ruin the ecu readings.
check all pipes as if its not got the vacuum some of the butterflies wont open and u will loose top ends revs

  • Had a good while toying with it today once the rain stopped, I know the manual says dont mess with the stop screw, but I dont care for it since it didnt say please first.

Id recommend it fully, cars is crude on the power, it now just pushes so hard, and still no smoke. Do you remember what fuse it is to reset the ecu cos I hate disconnecting the battery terminals.

Warm car fully then switch ignition off> Remove air intake tubing> Spray carb cleaner all around throttle body and its ports and then clean it up with some lint free cloth and not paper (do this first as doing it after setting TSS and TPS will effect where the throttle plate sits afterwards and undo your settingd)> Refit intake tubing> Diag mode> Start engine> AAS fully wound in> TSS in til engine near dies> AAS out until desired RPM reached> Ignition off and remove air intake tubing> Undo TPS> 0.40mm feeler guage between TSS and linkage> Measure terminals C+D for continuity> Tap TPS around til you get continuity at 0.40mm> remove .40 and insert .50> Test for no continuity> Repeat until continuity at .40 but not at .50> Tighten TPS again> Recheck .40 and .50 continuity hasnt altered while tightening TPS>Refit air intake tubing> Remove from diag mode, start car and enjoy the yummy ness.

Surprisingly, you can wind the engine RIGHT down before it conks out, I got it to that odd mark on the tacho thats just above 0rpm, guessing thats what thats for since it doesnt spec 500 like the other intermediate dashes do and when I got it to that line it on the absolute brink of stalling, engine was thrashing about so harshly in a desperate bid to stay alive that it was making the car shake!

  • ok, i had a good look around for the smokyness today. i have nipped up the bolts holding the front rocker cover on and removed all oil from the wells again as it was starting to build up. I have checked all air intake pipes for leaks and all vacuum pipes for leaks, all is clear on that front from what i can see. I have removed piping to the throttle body and it was absolutely splattered with oil so i have cleaned that up as much as i can for now, will buy some carb cleaner tomorrow and give it a proper spray out. I have also cleaned the pcv valve properly.

I will let you know if the hesitation and smoke has disapeared tomorrow. I am only posting this now because i was driving back from hospital yesterday, following a rather slow driver and getting quite adgitated with my right foot. everytime i let it overrun and booted it up behind him again i would get some SERIOUS smoke from the back. it is starting to worry me a bit. Is there anything else anyone can suggest? that whole ECU post from jesta sounds rather complicated

  • is it worth changing the plugs as they may not be working to thier full potential?

  • thats not about the ecu, thats the throttle body, tps, tss and aas. If you coming to yeovil again in the next few weeks, bring me a cold can of relentless and Ill do it for you ;)

Another thing, hows your air filter? Blocked air filters are no good

  • i have an after market one on there and it was new, i never used it before i put it on this car. we may be up that way sooner than expected bud but for the life of me, i cant remember why pmsl! think i will ask the misses when she wakes up

  • Im still in yeovil for these coming 3 weeks, after that I move house, the weekend of 17th and 18th Sept is moving weekend, I could do it after that but cant do it on that weekend.

  • did you find out when/why your coming back up here?
