GIRLIE OWNER REQUIRES HELP!!!

  • Hi all
I have a '95 MX3 V6. I took her to have a rusty wheel arch fixed (rear, drivers side) and the garage said it's beyond repair, as its spread right back almost to the rear bumper - so she needs an 'insert' or a whole new quarter panel. He said i'd just have to keep searching the net and hope to find someone breaking that can dismantle and sell me the panel - then it'll be about £400 to fit and paint to match. I cant find anything and it needs sorting ASAP! Other than this arch, she's in really good condition. I am a real girlie when it comes to fixing cars - i know nothing. Can anyone make any suggestions or help me out?
    Thanks :)

  • Got any pictures of rear quarter?

  • welcome along
to get the rear quater like you suggest would mean using a gas cutter and cutting the rear section of the car, from what you describe it sounds like you can climb in the boot without opening the door

Have you got a pic of it at all, it sounds like a hell of a lot of work needs to be done

  • I agree with above suggestions-get some pics up, lets see the extent of the damage. Its a huge job having a rear panel fitted, and judging by the cost you would probably be better off buying a similar car and making one good one out of the two, then binning off whats left!

Hate to say it, but I do agree with this! Unless you are really attached to this car, it makes sense in the long run to find another decent shell and use
    all your good bits.

  • Or it makes sense to reply to our posts!

Don't, if you reply it takes the challenge out of it…

Come on guys, get Mspaint at the ready and come up with some creative images of what you "think" it looks like.

  • You are an impatient bunch! Here she is…....

  • If that is it, and its not through the wheel arch underneath then you need to change your mechanic, that can be done with filler and a quick spray if its not through the wheel arch inside as well

If its just that, take it to a proper bodyshop and get them to fill it and spray it, that is not a whole new panel if its just that bit on the outside

  • anybody know any good bodyshops in bucks / oxfordshire then?!

I'll only be doing her up enough to sell her now as have just bought another one….. :O It was a bit of an impulse buy admittedly - but i found a v6 in black, 40K on the clock, one owner and garaged from new, no rust, air-con, central locking and alarm, tax'd and MOT'd. I figured if i wanted to try and have an MX3 for as long as possible this one was a better bet for me - didnt wanna miss out so i went ahead and borrowed the cash to buy it.

Now i gotta sell my red one ASAP, which is HEARTBREAKING cos i LOVE her to pieces - but she'd be better with someone that has the know how to do some work on her. So, will speak to a few more bodyshops on Monday and see if its worth me fixing her up a bit to sell, or sell as is :(
I hope she goes to a loving home....

  • Yup, that's not so bad. was expecting more holes then Fred Flintstones car :)

  • TBH with the price MX3's are getting at the moment, I wouldnt bother, the cost will probably outweigh the gain
People are more likely to buy if it at a good price if it had a new cambelt and waterpump fitted, than the rear wheel arch looking tidy. Its up to you, I would look on google for a spray shop in your area and ask them to fill it and spray it, its only a small patch

  • If you are selling the car, then what you have to think about is how much you want for the car the state it is in now and how much you would want for it with the wheel arch repaired. Even a quick filler job is gonna cost you at least £200 for a decent job IMO

was this on ebay. i saw a mint black one with low mileage in a showroom on there. it was a beaut and if it was i hope you didnt pay the asking price

  • erm, yeah, i did….

  • It was tidy mind, as long as you are happy with it i guess price doesnt really matter. possibly one of the cleanest MX3's i have ever seen for sale so it should do you well for a fair few years yet :) i hope you enjoy it.

  • Thanks :)

do i need to send my big brother over to slap em for ripping me off? Seemed an ok' price compared to others and they werent taking offers so… :s

I plan to treat this one like she's made of pure gold and hopefully keep her for a long time to come.

I wont mod her much as i think they were made perfect, but my plan is, when money allows...

She'll need a cambelt replacement at some point - i've been quoted £230 - is that average?
Buy her some nice custom floor mats
Smoked side indicators with LED lights (saw some on ebay for £9 ish)
Theres a small dent above rear light thats starting to bubble the paint a little (not even an inch long) - will have that sorted asap
Someone told me i should have her 'undersealed' as its my winter commuting car and i live in the counrty. Anyone had this done?
Still got original stereo in - might fit an ipod connector at some point.

  • that seems about right for a cambelt fitment but the price of the kit will be a fair bit as well (these cars are rather expensive to keep running unfortunately)
I am with you on the floor mats, need some myself to cover the sub/amp cables lol.
undersealing is a very good idea as it 2should" prevent your car from rusting out. I will be doing mine shortly.
Stereo's are easy enough to fit as well. just need the loom which you can get from either halfords for £14.99 or ebay for about £2 ;) I got mine from halfords as i got a pretty good deal on the stereo and fitted it in their car park (last week) easy to do.

sounds like some great plans there, definately with the underseal will protect it from the nasty road salt.

  • definately underseal. Its not expensive, and only time consuming really, perhaps a full day or two if you are a stickler like me, just get them nooks and crannies!

cambelt price sounds good, but of course you need to add on the cost of thebelt, tensioner etc, and you may as well get all the other belts changed at the same time. Its a bit of an arse of a job to do, but any good mechanic will do it just by jacking the car up, removing inner arch liner and accessing the tensioer etc from there, easy! Think its about 4 hours labour, ish, just ensure a GOOD mechanic does it, because if they f*ck it up, them bad things can ensue!

glad you got a new black one, mines black, and almost mint! where is the dent, actually on the boot lid? Might be worth considering a new boot lid, will cost you less than a repair, probably..
