Did you know?

  • I just got told that some of the first mx-3's had a superchrger on as standard!

i also heard that it didnt work and made the engine less efficient! the car gain 20bhp when removed?

    Anyone heard this before??

  • That's interesting!
Though it makes sense if our engines were designed by Porsche. They do tend to do things backwards/oddly! :P

**Sounds like bollocks to me. Even if you're just talking about the K8 engines rather than the cars - it'd be damned peculiar to spend 3 years developing a whole new engine line and not noticing it doesn't work until after you've put it into a car and sold a few - there's not a lot of places left in the engine bay that a manufacturer would actually place a supercharger and have it easily accessible to its own mechanics for regular maintenance. The possibility of burying something that has to be serviced regularly so deep in a £14k car that a routine service costs 10% of the car's value for time spent getting to it would never float past the marketing, finance or warranty departments.

And if it's the four pot it sounds even less likely - that'd already have been in the MX-5 for two years and never got a factory supercharger…**

**Other way about - Porsche bought into the VRIS tech during development turned it into VarioRam. The K8 was largely developed by Mazda with Suzuki.

I've got a patent application doc floating around somewhere describing in full the K8 engine. Neither supercharging nor Porsche are mentioned - though Suzuki are. The KJ one would be interesting though and you've got to imagine Mazda didn't just come up with the Miller Cycle one day in 1998 and decide to apply it to a KL. That'd be just about the only way I can think of for supercharging to have ever come up in the K8 development - a K8-ZEM…**

    Thought so!

I cant find anything on the net to suggest otherwise.
