High pitched whine at speed

  • No for once its not Her Indoors, (although she does do that too)

Ive noticed that when getting to cruising speed, ie 45+ there is a high pitched whine that gets louder to about 70 then goes away (or is at least drowned out by road/engine noise)

Being new to the car and a massive hypochondriac I dont know if anyone else gets this or what on earth it could be.

It doesnt seem to come from one side more than another although if pushed i guess i would say front passenger side, although having never sat anywhere other than drivers seat i wouldnt know.

    Any suggestions??

  • Does it increase with speed or is it constant when you get above a certain speed??

When I drove that one around before you collected it I never heard anything and my dad was driving that when we got it from poole and he never said he heard anything either.

If its constant it could be wind whistling through something at the front.

If it increases it could be something on the drive train
Drive shafts, bearings or CV joint

Cv joints are quite popular to go on these but they usually knock first when turning

Wheel bearings usually make a rumbling sort of whoa whoa whoa noise that is usually found at lower speeds and I have never heard of drive shafts whining at high speed.

When you take it for a longish drive next get out and touch the drivers side front wheel and then passenger front wheel if one feels hotter it could be a bearing starting to go but then bearings will make a noise if just a piece of chrome has come off.

To test wheel bearing jack each corner up and give the wheel a wiggle top to bottom when they go the bearing becomes loose and when they are properly shot they sound like you are in the cockpit of a light aircraft

Another is that if you cannot figure out where its coming from then it could be the rear and the noise travels up the subframe.

  • cheers DJ. Yeah it gets louder with speed. its not too bad but just a bit annoying.
ill check the bearings today but i dont think its them. am at a loss.

Might try ignoring it then see if gets worse?

These do go through CV joints a lot, think everyone here has had to change one at some point, if it is front passenger bearing I have a complete hub I can post to you that is in good order.

Otherwise it could be CV joint but they normally knock.

Give it a while to see if it gets any worse, could check gearbox oil just in case as I havent done that to that car but then it didnt leak so it shouldnt be that.

It might be a case of leave it to see if it gets worse then have another look at it

  • mine has a whine from the passenger side window seal, where the seal is on a curve at the top corner of the door, it folds itself and ends up getting pinched under the glass everytime i open that window, maybe yours is the same?

  • It does sound a bt like the wind. hopefully thats it.

  • some of the rubber door seals was peeling off mine too, its easy to slip it back into place, just run around the door seal with a finger, if it rolls back instead of flexing then thats where the seal has come off the door, for the window seal, simply take a look, theyre hard seals though, and while it might be tempting to use something hard to pry them, dont, use a finger, its hard rubber and your finger is gonna hurt, but youll just have to deal with it, use anything hard and you risk doing more damage than good

Edit: On second thoughts (wish id thought of it when I did it) use a hair dryer to warm the window seals up, should make them much more maluable and less painful :(
