6k HID lights

  • You need the ballasts to power to HID's, they run at 10,000v IIRC, youll also need the wiring and control box. They connect upto your battery directly, mine had 2x20amp fuses, you connect the plug to your old headlight connector. This allows your HID's to function the same as when using your old/normal lights.

With Hi/Lo kits it means that youll get dip and full beam. It uses a solenoid or such to push the bulb forward, which exposes the bulb more and adds a deifferent reflection angle off the reflector lens.

I did this mod on my motorbike and in my opinion it was awful, the light pattern was worse than standard, and if your doing it on refracted glass (standard MX3 lens) then itll be nightmarish. Without trying to sound like a buzz kill, its also illegal, and for a good reason, because the beam pattern/angles arent managed and the reflector isnt designed for those bulbs, you will constantly be blinding other drivers with shards of light. In tunnels mine used to give a disco ball effect to the walls and ceiling!

If you want the best lighting then youll need to retrofit Hi/Lo projectors, these are available on ebay for £70 from china suppliers, uk ones charge well over a £120 last time I looked, for the exact same kit. They require head light disassembly and youll need a clear lens not one with the diffuser blanes, good look with finding one of those (though if you do, let me know cos I want to do this to my mx3)

As for temperature colours, its based on Kelvin thermodynamic (if youve done photography youll be familiar with this already) its basically a scale of object heat but also translates to use as colour for reasons I wont bore you with. In a nutshell the if you think of it as that rainbow song at school Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-and-Blue-Indigo-and-Violet-too. Then youll get the general idea on which way your colour is going, 4300k is often a standard choice to get 'daylight' though in films 5600k is used to get daylight. 6000k has a good daylight colour but with a small hint of blue. Anything beyond 6000k is going into whacky colours like strong blue and purples. I wouldnt recommend anything after 6000k as your actually LOOSING light power after about 5600k. So you may have interesting colours but your lights will be dim compared to someone with 4300-6000k bulbs, aswell as you being illegal, which all seems a bit counter productive when your actual aim is to have more power from your lights.

Run with 35w bulbs, its plenty believe me, itll also free up 50watts from your power draining which your car/stereo with thank you for. The 55watts will obviously be more powerful, but should be avoided as they really arent necessary and its not uncommon for them to melt the headlight housing.

When you use the proper projectors with the HID's then its just wow! (Aswell as perfectly legal) On the bike my girlfriend insisted on following me because she could see better. If someone wants then Ill post up some pic's for you to gander at. Ta, J

  • Sorry to hijack this thread, but I read some you guys are using projectors…are these the sort of things...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120642150614?

These look the nuts, but I don't want to welly if they're not UK road legal.

    Cheers all.

  • I have them not sure about anyone else though, got my mot coming up very soon so i will let you know but to me they look fine.

  • They arrived today :D :D
Will get some pix up for you when I fit them sunday 8) 8)

  • Im really struggling to follow whats going on here, cos my HID and Projectors dont fit in with anyone elses ideas of HIDS and projectors. Ill post up pictures of what Im talking about in a bit. I have Bi Xenon HID's from the same projector, and its not one of the solenoid driven ones, to the best of my knowledge those are illegal.

Which brings me onto my next bit, does anyone want to buy the H4 Bixenon HID bulbs mentioned above? Near new, used them for a week before I decided to go back to standard, been sat in a box since.

  • Dont know about that, I have fitted and only one works the ballast is broken I am now waiting for a replacement ballast :(

  • How long will it take for a ballast to get shipped? You got photos of what bulbs your using? Aswell as a pic of them in use?

These are the bulbs supplied, they do JUST fit in the light with the cap on

  • Yep, those are the ones that I have sitting in a box, though I paid an extortionate amount cos I got them from the uk. They also didnt put out the HID effect your hoping for.

    Dip

    Full

  • When I tried it, it seemed pretty good on just the one but that was during the day, I will wait for the ballast to arrive and go for it again :D

  • time for those pics dj…

  • The ballast never turned up lying chinese git, they are on the list to do but they are in a box from moving house and as yet not found them
