6k HID lights

  • I know a couple of you have fitted HID kits and was shopping today and found 6000k full bi-xenon kits with the ballast chips all inclusive for £35 by buying from china via america.

I am guessing this is a good deal as I was searching and they seem to start at £60 in the UK.

My question is am I right that the standard non bi-xenon bulbs DONT have main beam built into them, they are just standard headlight only ??

Is the ballast packs for adjusting the intensity or can you use them without the packs and they are just set at default brightness ??

If you dont need the ballast packs then the price drops under £30 or if you can just use the basic non bi-xenon bulbs this goes under £20

I have kept the links off here before I know what is what with these
    Thanks

  • I've got 8k

non Bi - Is no main beam.

I had to use the packs, but didn't know I could adjust them.

TBH I'd spend more and get the set with High beams bud.

I have bought a set of bi xenons, was thinking of getting the plain ones without the ballast packs for the spotlights

I am guessing they are not MOT passable due to the brightness

  • Mine passed an MOT.

    Meh.. Ok I wants.

  • It was the bixenons for £35 a complete kit, I might buy the plain ones for the spotlights but do you know if they work without the ballast packs as I can get the non bi's for about £20

  • OK i have the projectors on now but wasnt going to pay £89 extra to HIDs in them, can u post the link DJ to where you got yours from, dont suppose you know if they would fit my mine now?

    I will admint i no F-all about light, 4-6-8-10-12000ks, fitting, ballasts…...

I take it mine come with ballasts in already....

so there are two lights main beam and dips, do i need 2 sets one for each?

Also im after some ultra bright rear bulbs, indicators and reverse. Also ultra bright for the side repeaters too. Sick of people nt noticing my indicators and flashing me thinking i only have side light on from behind.

  • wonder how bright these would be?

They are good but not very much brighter on the stop side, theyre legal (just) but not massive difference, instead of those I have a brand new pair here for £5 if you want them

    Barrywhite

The headlights you need for HIDs are standard headlight bulb fitting

You need the ballast packs as they are like the motor you put in the side of strip lights to make them work, they wont without so get the kit

The 4 - 12,000k is the light scale - normal headlights are between 1-2,000k

There are 2 types HID xenon and HID BI-xenon
The Bi-xenon bulbs have the dipped AND main beam
plain xenon are just normal headlights

The link to get them cheap is here, these are 6,000k output
They post to UK, just buying in sterling from china listing in america makes them cheaper and a good tip to save money on chinese imports

  • He now has 2 sets of bulbs though and I dont think they will be H4 seing as he has a seperate projector for his full and dipped

Get a picture of the bulbs if you are unsure of the type they are and i can forward you to some ebay links on what you need

  • here is the colour chart

I have 8k there no bad but the 10k looks good!

Ok so what i still dont understand is like dave said on the lights the inside bulbs are main and the outside are dipped. When main are on and i dip them the main go off and the dips come on. So would i need just the x2HID Xenon kits not the bixenon's?

Or i suppose i could just do the main beams as the dips are used much less.

Also i love the delivery chart on the link lol.

Dave, I like the 6k's i think they go a bit blue after that and im not to keen tbh.

The dipped and main beam are all in one bulb, the other bulb is just side light, you need the Bi-xenons for the main + dipped or the standards are for dipped only with NO MAIN BEAM

He has 2 differnt lights though, 1 for dipped beam and 1 for main beam he no longer has a H4 bulb that does both

barry post a picture of what bulbs are used and i will find u the hid's u need, I am under the impression u might need 2 sets

Nuts, he has projectors now, I forgot that bit.
Find out which ones you need, it could be possible to get the correct bulb type then get double dipped and double mains if required or single dipped and double mains :D

  • Right thanks guys, thats what i didnt understand about having two sets. I will take some pics tonight and post up.

  • i have a set of hids and i did a bit of research and i found out that cheap aint always good most sites advise away from cheap ebay makes made in japan or china also ive found 3 different types of H4 bulb available these are

    1 single beam (low)

2 high and low ( which is still 1 bulb but uses a motor to pull the light in and out of the holder creating a brighter light )

3 single hid beam (low) which has a halogen bulb in aswell for high beam

they all use ballasts, of which there are two type norm and slimline both do the same job but slimline are just that … slim. and of these you can buy a 55watt and a 35watt kit, the reason for the ballast is to control the current to the bulb which isnt like a norm bulb where the current is passed through the philliment the hids blubs arc ( constantly spark like a spark plug ) creating the light

the light that is created is messured in kevlins (heat not colour) the higher the kelvin the hotter the bulb creatin a different colour temp on the road.

i personlly have 12000k which has a purple / blue colour temp which is pretty good at showing road signs / white lines / cats eyes etc the only problem i find is that in the rain they dont seem as bright a few of my friends have different colour temps 4500k and 8000k and the lad with the 8000k says the same when it rains the light is poor

also these kits are classed as illegal due to them not having the correct beam pattern acording to this web site www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsaftey/drs/hidheadlamps
but mine passed the MOT ?!?!?!

i hope ive helped with what ive found and if you have any problems or you find any other info please let me know.... thanks Stew

  • You need the ballasts to power to HID's, they run at 10,000v IIRC, youll also need the wiring and control box. They connect upto your battery directly, mine had 2x20amp fuses, you connect the plug to your old headlight connector. This allows your HID's to function the same as when using your old/normal lights.

With Hi/Lo kits it means that youll get dip and full beam. It uses a solenoid or such to push the bulb forward, which exposes the bulb more and adds a deifferent reflection angle off the reflector lens.

I did this mod on my motorbike and in my opinion it was awful, the light pattern was worse than standard, and if your doing it on refracted glass (standard MX3 lens) then itll be nightmarish. Without trying to sound like a buzz kill, its also illegal, and for a good reason, because the beam pattern/angles arent managed and the reflector isnt designed for those bulbs, you will constantly be blinding other drivers with shards of light. In tunnels mine used to give a disco ball effect to the walls and ceiling!

If you want the best lighting then youll need to retrofit Hi/Lo projectors, these are available on ebay for £70 from china suppliers, uk ones charge well over a £120 last time I looked, for the exact same kit. They require head light disassembly and youll need a clear lens not one with the diffuser blanes, good look with finding one of those (though if you do, let me know cos I want to do this to my mx3)

As for temperature colours, its based on Kelvin thermodynamic (if youve done photography youll be familiar with this already) its basically a scale of object heat but also translates to use as colour for reasons I wont bore you with. In a nutshell the if you think of it as that rainbow song at school Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-and-Blue-Indigo-and-Violet-too. Then youll get the general idea on which way your colour is going, 4300k is often a standard choice to get 'daylight' though in films 5600k is used to get daylight. 6000k has a good daylight colour but with a small hint of blue. Anything beyond 6000k is going into whacky colours like strong blue and purples. I wouldnt recommend anything after 6000k as your actually LOOSING light power after about 5600k. So you may have interesting colours but your lights will be dim compared to someone with 4300-6000k bulbs, aswell as you being illegal, which all seems a bit counter productive when your actual aim is to have more power from your lights.

Run with 35w bulbs, its plenty believe me, itll also free up 50watts from your power draining which your car/stereo with thank you for. The 55watts will obviously be more powerful, but should be avoided as they really arent necessary and its not uncommon for them to melt the headlight housing.

When you use the proper projectors with the HID's then its just wow! (Aswell as perfectly legal) On the bike my girlfriend insisted on following me because she could see better. If someone wants then Ill post up some pic's for you to gander at. Ta, J

  • Sorry to hijack this thread, but I read some you guys are using projectors…are these the sort of things...http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120642150614?

These look the nuts, but I don't want to welly if they're not UK road legal.

    Cheers all.

  • I have them not sure about anyone else though, got my mot coming up very soon so i will let you know but to me they look fine.

  • They arrived today :D :D
Will get some pix up for you when I fit them sunday 8) 8)
