Wheel not free-spinning

  • Hey guys,

I've been wracking my brains over this problem for a while now.

I jacked up the car a couple of months ago just to do some basic checks, when I found the wheel wasn't free-spinning in the air - it seems very tight!

A week later, after a wheel bearing and ball joint change - it's still the same!
I jacked up the other side to see if that was similar, and it also does the same thing?!

Could this be a diff/gearbox problem ya think?

I don't get any horrible noises since replacing the bearing, just lots of engine breaking and an obvious lack of power.

Any help would be appreciated!! Cheers!

  • Did you check the brakes ? sounds like the calipers could be sticking causing the front brakes to bind. Just a thought like.

  • I know that this might seem obvious and a stupid question and I'm not trying to be funny or a smart ar$e (Disclaimer out of the way, LOL)
but, is it in neutral when it's up in the air? cause' if it's in gear it's not going to spin freely.

Pretty sure it's not the brakes, you don't hear them grating on the discs as you spin them…

Haha, not to worry! Nope, defo in netural. Me and my Dad almost got into an arguement over it coz he was SURE I had it in gear! Haha!

  • Prop the front of the car up, start it and drive it in 1st for 10 mins then let it stall.

If the discs are hot, its the breaks. :)

  • Ok, so I finally got round to making this vid to show people the problem.

As you can see, I have no calipers or discs on, so it's NOT a brake problem.
I've been told it could possibly be a diff bearing?
Anyone know how hard it is to replace one or how expensive it could be?

    I'm pretty sure I have a gearbox problem…

P.S: Yes, it IS in neutral!!!
