Complete newbie to mx3's 1.8 V6 se on its way :)

  • @25613dd2f0=daniel:

I have a Scorpion back box to go on it (budget is tight so i cant afford a full system yet) scorpion came off a mitsubishi carisma and looking at the fitments it should just bolt on fingers crossed :) I have a cheap induction air filter but no pipe, hense why i resorted to drilling the airbox on my mondeo. i really am looking forward to getting this car. so much potential. love the comment about the honda, its just a japanese rover :P. I was thinking about a green cotten filter and keeping the standard air box as it is "meant" to be the most efficiant air box you will find but i imagine a k&n or such like induction kits will be much more efficiant with a direct cold air infeed. maybe by removing one of the front fog lights? :)
    P.S that 323 sounds f*&king AWESOME!!

Your pretty much right a normal open induction wont help much it wll give it noise reduce ur petrol but no real gains and its right next to the engine sucking in warm air

Enclosed induction kit with a cold air pipe coming from the fog light area would be an ideal place to put it as long as u mesh it. right at the front and the faster u go the more air will be going in and cold!!

Thats why i chose the apollo, u can take the cover off and get sound like the video there for when u want to show off, then u can put the cover back on when u want performance just doesnt sound as loud

so if ur on a budget just keep the original filter thats in it now a aftermarket panel filter is a waste if u want a propper induction later on, there only good because aparently u dont need to replace them, they give no sound and i have never noticed any gains.

Cutting holes again warm air but u get some free noise :P

Exhaust systems i think if ur not going to de-cat or upgrade the manifold why bother as most of the restrictions are they 2, again people do it for noise and build the exhaust system to full stainless over time

  • yeah basictly for me it would be just for noise possibly 1 or 2 hp with the air filter. can i ask though, would the air filter (cone) cause any harm to the engine other than heat soak from sucking in warm air. i dont really want to drill the air box as i would like to put it back in if i ever decide to sell. i know its only a baby V6 so i dont really want to cause any damage to it. also how often does the cam belt need changing. its got 89,000 on the clock. if its every 30,000 i will do it right away.

by the way, cheaper insurance than a 2.0 mondeo  unbelievable isnt it

  • Sorry one more thing, i was just looking through other peoples posts and i have seen that a V6 SE model is meant to be 1 of 100. could someone verify this. if it is then a previous owner has sold the half leather  its a 1995/96 on a N plate. would love to know if i have a bargain here :P

No, an SE would be one of a few hundred and it'd be a 93/94 L or M reg. They're Clear White and have half leather, half suede interiors. Like Marvin, my SE.

  • ok cool. it is white in colour but like i said no half leather and according to the insurance company it is an SE. guess ill wait for the log book lol. white does seem to be a rare colour for these cars. there isnt a single one on ebay

There's a Eunos Presso on ebay in white, quite good condition too

  • There was a second run of SEs - though I've no idea of the spec - at the same time as the Equipe (Noble Green) came out, which would be 1995/6. If I recall right, they were all either Clear White or that bluey-green colour (Sparkle Green on the MX-5/323… had a different name for the MX-3 I can never remember) but I don't recall what else they had that made them different to normal V6s.

  • i have bought one and its a uk model. love the sound of the engine

  • yeah mine must be from the second run. i looked on wiki and apparently they made 100 SE's in '96 only in white. i will paste below

In 1996, Mazda Europe produced 100 Mazda MX-3 V6 SEs. These had a leather and suede interior, and all had the clear White body colour. There were also a limited number of Mazda MX-3 V6 Equipes, with Sparkle Green Metallic or Noble Green exteriors.

doesnt say what else was different but never mind. :) im just happy to have one

  • **Yeah, that's not even close to true.

The original SE - 93/4 in Clear White - was a limited run, but I don't recall how many of them there were. They had the half leather, half light grey suede interior and a unique set of wheels (gunmetal, polished lip, five spokes, made to look like split rims, 15x7).

The Equipe - 95/6 in Noble Green - wasn't limited run, but was the range-topper. Came with all leather and some other interior I don't recall well (I have the idea in my head it was half leather, half suede with body-colour stitching), unique wheels (silver five spokes, similar, but not same, fake split rim look, 15x7).

The second SE was, I think, a trim level like the Equipe. No limited numbers beyond how they sold and I recall they came with the stock V6 5-spokes (15x6) rather than the 6-spokes and were white or the sparkle green colour.

Nonetheless, an MX-3 is an MX-3 is an MX-3. My SE is still an SE in name only as his interior is in my V6 (soon to be joined by his wheels) - and likely there's very few MX-3s left as they were when they left the factory, so whether yours is an SE or not, go enjoy it :D**

  • i will enjoy it when i pick it up. :) the garage i bought it off was kind enough to MOT it and it failed on all breaks and a fuel leak, all of which is being done for me at no cost :D I really cant wait to pick it up. will post a few pics up when i get it. gotta be honest i have never owned a white car before so gotta learn to keep it clean lol. and it does have the 5 spoke alloys the same as these:

its so nice to drive. what mods have you done to yours?

  • Red - my V6 - has only had an interior upgrade to SE (borrowed from Marvin, my SE) and slightly tweaked braking system (Mintex pads, Black Diamond grooved discs). Marvin - my SE - is in the middle of a slightly more stern package of changes which, for now, we'll gloss over, but they're well on the way and most of the parts are now in this country at least, if not on him.

  • lol marvin… making me laugh. i cant wait to start modding. might go for a spray job before i do anything. something similar to this:

sorry didnt realise the link was that long haha. this will be my first V6. i am hoping its economical. how much did you pay for your V6? double checked insurance and its defo an SE. like you said must be a later one. :)

  • I got Red in August 2003 for £3,250 and Marvin last May for £250 :D

  • bloody hell. you got a car as rare as that for pennys. nice one. :D bought mine for £800. it is fair tidy. bit of rust by the spoiler but nothing in the arches. i was just looking for some alloys on ebay. is the V6 tricky to work on? is it eco? sorry about all the questions. have you got any pics of your cars up? would love to take a ganders

  • **Marvin was a non-runner at the time. Couple of rust spots, broken windscreen, slightly gammy-sounding engine… The couple selling him had offers of £400 to break him (the interior and wheels were worth that), but they wanted him to be put back on the road and I was after an SE for a project.

Of course he's slightly more of a non-runner right now - he has no engine or gearbox (or wheels, suspension, exhaust, interior - you get the idea) - but before one rebuilds, one must first dismantle. He's in the stripped down, cleaning up stage right now :D

I have a Famine's Fleet thread, which has some of our other cars. And you may recognise the other red one, which has spent some considerable time in Banbury.

In terms of engine work itself, yes, the V6 is tricky. We did a cambelt change and it was bordering on gynaecology with the engine in place, but with a service manual to hand everything is easy enough in the end.

Economical? Red tends to run about 35mpg on longer journeys, 32mpg on average and high 20s if forced to bimble around town more regularly. It's about the same as an MX-5, only better on longer runs due to the better drag coefficient. We also have a 2.2 4-pot which gets about 32mpg on runs, a 2.3 V6 which runs close to 30mpg and a 2.5 straight six which just about breaks 30mpg, so Red is probably the most economical of the cars we have. Though as they say, your mileage may vary.**

    .

Was the car from Banbury or is that where your from?

  • **Neither :D

But I visit Banbury on occasion (most recent was mid-August) and we loaned the car to a friend there for a couple of months - he was without a working car and Blue was sitting idle, not getting much use.**

cool, there are quite a few 3's around here, was thinking you was one of them.

  • There is a couple of mx3's where i live, all completely standard. i have never been a fan of small cars but i fell lin love with this one. i was looking to get an st24 but felt this would be a cheaper, more economical alternative. and if im honest, it feels just as quick. anyone had a go at an st24 in a mx3? (nothing illegal obviously  )
