Terrible banging noice

  • Help! My just bought MX3 V6 has started making a repetitive banging noise, front drivers side. Could it be the springs and where is the best place to get replacements?

Have you checked the shocks for any leaks? When does the noise become more noticeable? i.e. when turning, this could be a dodgy CV joint.

If it's all the time it sounds like something in the suspension components may have gone like you said.

Have a quick look on ebay or in the for sale threads on here.

  • Hi, is that sue who bought the green V6 from me???
I am sorry for not getting back to you I no longer have your number in my phone as I never saved it.

I spoke to the mechanic I use on monday as he has been away and what you described to me over the phone as it only happens between 30-40mph it sounds like maybe a a piece of wheel arch trim has come loose or something like that and its flapping creating a noise.

If the noise was constant from start to 70+ it would be something on the drive train ( drive shaft, bearing or CV joint) but I know all the bearings were done in that unless one has just suddenly gone

If it is happening when you go over bumps and you can feel it in the steering wheel then maybe its a shock absorber, I had a red one before the green one that something went inside the shock absorber and it would bang all over the place, mainly over speed bumps when I had it checked everything was fine it was just a fault inside

If a spring had gone you would be able to see it as the car would lean to one corner when its parked on flat ground where the spring would be lower on that corner.

What you described over the phone that it is only at a certain speed and that it suddenly happened when you were driving on the motorway seems like something is banging where its loose

  • Sounds like the shock if it's what DJ is saying, my rear (of the car before you all start!) was making some awful sounds and I've just found out that it is shot and needs replacing.

  • Mine done that when I brought it. Every time you hit a slight bump even it banged and rattled. Both front shocks were leaking. Trip to proven products got bilsten shocks for half of what mechanic priced at. Is annoying but don't worry it's not a major fix and I doubt it risks damaging anything just annoying if anything.

It's a sure MOT fail, as I found out today :(

  • Hi Keith thanks for trying the mechanic. I've decided to take it to the garage on Monday so here's hoping it's nothing to bad. I still reckon it's those wretched speed bumps that have caused the problem! It's great that so many people have been trying to help.

  • It's not something that djmarco would have known about. Mine was fine for first week of ownership but then started banging. I was doing alot of b road driving back then so poor roads also prob didn't help. Keep us posted! Don't take it to quik to take your money quik fit now!

  • Thanks for all the help ,turned out djmarcopolo was right it was the drive shaft. I managed to buy one on the internet & the garage fitted it for me. Probably cost a lot less than if they had supplied it.

  • Which side was it out of interest ??

  • Drivers side. Would it have been better to have had both drive shafts replaced?

    Djmarcopolo reply;

Not necessarily, I had the passenger side replaced on that car a while ago, thats just really unfortunate. Now its done I bet you love driving it now

  • Yes it's geat. Thanks for the info regarding the other drive shaft.
