Value of an MX-3



  • How much would you say this is worth? trying to think of how much but prices seem to be from £300 - £1000!

  • I like the MX-5 and they are nice for summer, but I much prefer the MX-3.

    You can drive MX-3 faster into corners.
    The MX-5 is really shit in the wet.
    MX-3 is nicer to bi in during the winter.
    The MX-5 is slow but then so is a MX-3 without the KLZE swap.
    The plus side is that there are plenty of Turbo MX-5's already out there.

    Saying that if I had to buy a cheap convertible again it would be an MX-5.

    If its RWD your after buy a nissan 200sx they are 200bhp as standard.



  • **I've had two MX-5s and two MX-3s.

    Now, I have no doubt that the MX-5 would spank an MX-3 round a track. The MX-5 has the advantages of RWD (power on earlier), lightweight (braking later, higher average corner speeds, better power-to-weight ratio), lower centre of gravity (higher average corner speeds), smaller wheelbase (higher polar moment), better footprint-to-height ratio (better corner stability) - and I could go on for a while. The MX-3 has one advantage - better torque curve.

    On our lovely British roads, however, the story's not quite as clear cut. In the odd bend, the MX-5 would be better for all the above reasons (and more), but most of the time the MX-3 is better - it's better on straight, high speed roads and much better when the going gets bumpy. I lived in Cambridgeshire, where many of the roads are sine waves, vertically. The MX-5 would feel and respond to every single bump but with 65% of the weight over the front, the MX-3 would plough straight through - feel and responsiveness is awesome on a track car, but on shtty British roads, it's not always desirable.

    Chuck in the fact that, as well as being better in the real world, the MX-3 is still the same with 4 people on board and a boot full of enough luggage for a 2 week holiday - whereas the MX-5 can manage 2 people and a weekend's worth, and feel every ounce of the extra weight.

    I'd refute that MX-5s are shit in the wet. They're hilarious (moreso in snow). Depends what tyres you put on them - my MX-3 came to me with P6000s and was absolutely dreadful to the point of undriveable in the rain. I'd also refute that MX-5s are not as nice in the winter - few things beat driving along with the roof down at -5 degrees outside. But then I've lived with MX-5s for three years, day-to-day.

    I already have my two MX-3s and I wouldn't buy another - whereas I don't currently have an MX-5 and would buy another. But, with three of us and two dogs, if I had no cars I'd get an MX-3 over an MX-5, no contest. MX-5s are much better to drive - they are the perfect sportscar (and so few cars are perfect at what they do) - but MX-3s are better cars.**
