KLZE and KLDE

  • I know the differnce, 20-30 odd bhp ze lower compression than de, but what else?

Is it really that much a differnce when comparing the 2 and if turbo/charger is on mind for the future would the DE not be better?

Im asking because I had the Mazda lantis and Mazda 323f zxi both 2.0 v6 uk at 145BHP and lantis at 170bhp same mods, the uk took off faster and by the time i cought up around 80-100 i hit the limiter and lets be honest when do you really hit they speeds I know this as I sold my friend the uk version

Ive just got the mx3 but before i even had it I wanted the 2.5 v6 in there as i love the sound of the K series but the 1.8 and 2.0 really let it down i think

DE's are very easy to pick up, infact thers one local to me the whole car for £300 with 78k miles engine gearbox loom parts from the car to sell on

I dont think there is many low mile ZE's kicking about these days, ive seen a couple but there well into there 150k miles and thats no kilometers

So going with the klde im i really going to feel let down, Ive heard you get better mpg from them aswell?

  • There was a guy on mx6 who made DE based Ze hybrid, used ze intake, throttle bodie, ze ecu I think along with headers and cold air intake and made 175hp so not much in it with a few mods. Know gulf on here had de then went ze so ultimately he would know difference. If you were closer I'd let you have a go of mine!

  • You can still get imported ZE's from Japan with decent milage but if it was me i'd rebuild the engine anyway, especially if your going to boost it later.

    • valve stem seals
    • uprated valve springs
    • re-bed the valves
    • clean out and or replace the hydraulic tappets
    • polish exhaust side of head
    • knife edge the inlet side of head
    • match the inlet ports to the head ports
    • new head gasket kit and head bolts
    • check cylinders for roundness
    • hone the cylinders
    • new piston rings
    • lightweight flywheel
    • new clutch
    • new waterpump
    • cambelt and pully kit
    • underdrive pully
    • new auxillary belts
    • paint everything

not a bad place to start anyway, but will cost you more than buying the engine!

  • As for the difference between a ZE and DE.

I found a ZE guaranteed under 50,000 miles for £450 delivered and one for under 30,000 for £550 a few years back.

The most recent one I bought was £550 with unknown milage.

There are lots of people who have boosted the ZE now with no problems.

If your boosting though you will want to be running Megasquirt. I'd also look at a decent set of tyres, an LSD and coilovers to keep the power on the road.

When/whereabouts did you you buy yours? I had a quote from Nippon all in for £765 inc. VAT! I'd read it should cost about £200 less than that, and I'm sure it's not all down to inflation!
