Turbo conversion…

  • I'm looking into the future of possibly turboing my 1.6. Can anyone point me in the right direction on what I would need for this?

  • yep, its what Im upto this year

a manifold to start with , see corksport or find someone breaking a 323 turbo
    a turbo
custom oil feed line/ return back into the sump, so a welded union on there.
    custom water lines
turbo dump pipe>custom downpipe & exhaust I would imagine + lambda
boost pipes, joiners , hose clips
    intercooler
    larger injectors and fuel pump??
boost controller, either ECU controlled or mechanical boost controller.
piggy back fuel/igntion ECU… or full management.

plus a few extra little bits like heatshields and a wideband lambda kit if your really flush, and yeah and the most important bit... a boost gauge

  • Is the 323 mani a straight fit?

  • I cant say 100% yes as Im yet to offet to it up, but alsong as its a 1.6 DOHC 323 mani it should be a straight fit yes.

My workmate who turboed his 1.6 mx-5 last year has looked at the mani I've got and said the port spacing and bolt holes look right, so i shall be pissed if it's not!

So if I got one and stuck it on, say, now, would it affect my car in anyway or would I need the whole shebang at once?

  • you basically need the lot im afraid! apart from 'full management' if you want to run a piggy back fuel controller keeping the standard ECU in place you can and fit a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and retarded the ignition a little, wich is a risk though as you might melt some pistons if you dont have a wideband lambda sensor/display in place.

Looks like I'll be saving for a bit then…. 8)

  • Oh yeah, one more thing> an uprated clutch :P

  • JUST SWAP THE ENGINE INC ALL TURBO PARTS WIRING AND ANCILLERIES ECU INTERCOOLER FOR A BPT from a MAZDA 323.

Upgrade the clutch, engine mounts, brakes, tyres.

    or for even more power

Then upgrade the turbo to the BPD spec turbo ( readily available )

Buy a standalone reprogrammable ECU for best power

    Get it dyno tuned.

    Then for even more

SS headers, decat, full exhaust all at larger bore for turbo.

    Upgrade the cam.

    Get it dyno tuned again.

Much more power available this way than a KLZE swap but it does cost more.

    or

Put a klze in, you will need to buy a pre 1994 donor 1.8 v6 MX-3 car for all the wiring, radiators mounts etc. But you can buy one with a duff engine for £200 or less.

This way is much more hassle but alot cheaper.

  • ^ They are going to be rare as rocking horse poo!

  • you may aswell go for the 323 familia 1.8 engine

but to let you know, yes the 1.6/1.8 1.6/1.8 use the same crankcase, apart from the non turbo doesn't have an oil pipe for the turbo

I know, because i have the Familia and no, your not having my engine

  • Ebay.com in america sells the complete kit for MX3 turbo conversions, thats a T3/T4 turbo, the intercooler plus all pipes etc for around £400 including the postage. the exchange rate is good for america at the moment and that works out at around the £400 mark for $900

    http://www.anonymz.com/?http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MAZDA-MX3-MX-3-ALL-YEAR-T3-T4-TURBO-CHARGER-TURBO-KIT_W0QQitemZ260510221027QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3ca79e82e3

  • I wouldnt touch a cheap non brand turbo with a barge pole, wouldnt last five minutes
that kit doesnt include a manifold either!

making your own turbo kit up is the wayforards,
and part of the fun for me, wether it be 1.6 or 1.8 8)

  • Do you know what gets on my tits when you tell people about possibly turboing a car? When they say "why not just get a better car?"

Where would we be without people uprating their engines?

I find most of the retarded comments like that come from people who know nothing about cars/think a car can only be good if it's less than a few years old….and there's plenty of those around!

You should move this to rainys thread about stupid sayings/phrases LOL!

  • So has anybody here actually pulled this conversion off successfully? I'd love to try but it seems a much bigger job than i originally expected.

  • give me another six months i should have mine installed

  • great. i would like a full log of everything you do and everything that goes wrong when you're done pretty please with sugar on top.

  • it will all be in my project thread mate,
then i'll do a write up.
hopefully nothing goes wrong after it,lol
Im keeping it mega simple and basic to begin with
so it wont be too hard to trace if there is a problem :)
