Mx 3 weight lose question

  • thanks .
i dont wanna get pull up and get a huge fine and point or car crusher after spending all my time and money on it. im only 22 so see how much more i will have to pay for insurance and it being a second car
    thanks :D :D

  • As much as you want, so long as its nothing structural.

    Stuff you can get:

You can get plastic glass (apart from windscreen, even rear as glass is heavy).
    You can get fiberglass wings.
You can get carbon fiber bonnet.
Remove seats, put in Carbon fiber race seat.
Lightweight wheels from rota (make big difference as its unsprung weight)
Lightweight Coilovers (again big difference as its partly unsprung)
    Lightweight altenator
    Lightweight Flywheel (make big difference)
Lightweight Underdrive pulley (from probe V6)
    Lightweight Alloy Radiator
Lightweight Alloy fuel tanks but not mx3 specific so some fab work needed.
    Remove interior heater matrix.
    Light weight Gel Battery.
    lightweight willwood calipers

I wouldn't skin the doors or boot unless you were putting a full cage in.
Removing heater on a daily driver is not advised.
Removing carpets etc on daily driver is a definate NO its horrible.

If you were just thinking of removing interior bits etc, its not enough of a saving.

Do it in this order as it will get the best saving and still like your car:

    1. wheels
    2. flywheel
    3. bonnet
    4. plastic rear screen
    5. wings
    6. lightweight coilovers
    7. fiberglass seats
    8. Lightweight battery
    9. Mushroom Air filter in plastic housing
    10. remove front fogs, not needed by law
–--- below is for serious ultimate weight loss only as high price for small gains ------
    Alloy radiator
lightweight altenator (wont be car specific)
    lightweight fuel tank
lightweight starter (wont be car specific)
–--- below will alter how nice car is to drive and should be done on track car only ----replace front windows (door) with plastic
    remove rear seats
    remove plastic trim
remove carpets + sound deadening + headlining
remove everything on the dash thats not needed
    remove underseal and paint instead
lastly remove heater matrix (I would never do this as it setams up too much)
–-- only do after fitting cage ------
skin any unwanted metal from door and boot insides (but cage adds more weight than you remove, leave it to rally nutts)

    hope this helps

  • excellent little list there. The only thing thats not on there that i was thinking of doing was removing the naf sunroof electric motor and rails and trying to fabricate a manual closure just a pop up hinge. Similar to something that was used on mk3-4 fiesta glass sunroofs.

lightweigh alloys are the nuts, in un real how heavy my BK racing wheels are!

i lost airbag steering wheel too which was also quite heavy.

have been told window motors arnt too heavy so not worth hastle of trying a manual conversion.

  • this helps alot thanks
the only time im ganna drive it, is to santa pod so im going for light as possible

    thanks

  • Maybe going to extreme here but some dedicated track car Ive seen remove
sunroof completely and skin over with thin ali sheet, although we are talking glass roofs so may not be aplicable here?
Also swiss cheesing is quite popular . ie drilling holes to remove metal and weight, obviously nothing to structural as said. Even seen holes being drilled through the centre of bolts

  • Nice list Daryll

Garfy, the sunroof is pretty lardy! Some US/Can had a moonroof thing like you are describing. You could/should get the mechanism and fit a polycarbonate sunroof 8)

  • The sunroof mechanism is all removed from my car, sunroof has been spot welded back in place, with a thin skim of filler around to seal it up.

i think i will do this when i respray it, thanks

  • im look at priceing every thing up so i have an idea how much it ganna cost.where will i be able to find all of it from?

    thanks

  • you can also get a CF or fiberglass hatch… although the most gains are in the glass which shaves about 50+lbs

my buddy is selling a fiberglass hatch (only 1 in the world we know of) http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=71643
shipping might be kind of steep though... not sure

  • would love a carbon bonnet on mine!
found one here when I was looking : http://www.nicedeals.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=9798

lightweight alts. and starters : http://brise.co.uk/starter_motors.html
