Tapping from Engine

  • Of late if the engine is idle I can hear tapping from the engine bay, (can't hear it with the car moving but thats due to the exhaust) so I can't say 100% it's there or not.

    Any ideas.

  • often the HLAs (equivalent of tappets). If so an HLA treatment like wynns off fordprobestore or the like can help clear it. Though it's not doing any real harm, just a nuisance. Friction gear spring can go too on the rear left cam in the bay, it's a pain to change but also does little harm but make noise.

There's other things it can be (bad tensionser, rod knock etc) but they usually sound worse (especially rod knock!). I bet it's one of the harmless first two. Upload a video to youtube and I'll take an educated guess.

  • Will do a video tomorrow and shove it on you tube.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Video up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjfCfgzeBY4

No Image as it was done at night, You should be able to tell when I opened the hood and held the phone over the back set of sparkys.

(there is a bang near the end, I droped the hood) :(

It's a lot louded if the Engine is up to temp, but that video is the engine @ idle after a run of 6 miles so it's up2temp.

  • Hard to tell from the sound clip.

Best way to make sure is to buy or make an engine stethiscope.

Be careful when using it incase its too loud and don't put it near any moving parts.

Hold the stethiscope against the front rocker and listen, then hold it against the back rocker and you will know if there is a problem as it will be easy to hear.

If there is a problem don't just put in HLA treatment, I would change your oil first then put in the treatment and use a good 5W 30 Oil, then run it for a while and see how it gets on.

If it still does not go then your looking at either bad HLA wear or even camshaft wear.

If it were on the front head I would say you could swap the HLA's for a Known to be good second hand set as they are £14 each new! but as its a much bigger job doing the rear set I'd either live with it or if you do decide to get it sorted change the cam aswell as the HLA's again get a known to be good second hand cam.

  • Of all the MX3's I have owned the loud tapping noise usually from the left side of the engine on tickover or cold is the first sign that the oil is getting low, it has happened on all of them usually when the oil is just above minimum mark, they seem to struggle getting oil up to the top front bank

  • im also having this bad knocking noise. struggling to get the engine in bits though. cant get the cam belt cover off to mark it up. struggling to get the oil/p.s pump off and broke the belt tensioner in the process :( . found a free online manual though. its on a canadian mx-3 website! looks pretty good tho if you want to take a look:

i do have a manual on disc ordered from amazon so i dont know whether they are the same. no doubt htey ruddy will be tho…

I've topped up the oil, (got a leak from somewhere - need to get it on my ramps) but it's still there, I've got it booked in for a serious overhaul next month so hopefully fix a lot of things)

OK no probs, its always the first place to check its always a sign the oil is getting low

  • It could be the friction spring in the rear bank camshaft. It keeps the two toothed camshafts in tension to stop them rattling.
It's started doing it on my 323 v6. Have a search on club323f forum for friction spring and maylander739 as he done a guide on repairing it.
It's probably the HLA's though. Does it get louder when you slowly increase the revs up to about 4000rpm and hold it there?

  • no it don't bud, it's a constant taptaptaptaptaptap…

I'll check that out tho just in case.

    Thank you.
