Cam Belt Change, Full Kit Needed?

  • Hi all. Im going to get my cam belt changed and i was wondering do you really need the whole kit or would a timing belt itself suffice? It's going to cost me 155 plus vat to get the belt fitted (mazda part) or 295 incl. vat to get an aftermarket kit fitted. What do you think? Cheers. pedro

  • Depends on the history of the car mate, I would change the waterpump too if you have not done before

  • That's what i was thinking there isn't much history with it. I think the pricing is reasonable if not under priced as they are 'only' charging me three hours labour rather thatn the three and a half mazda were talking about.

  • Hmm

    Fordprobestore.co.uk High Quality Timing belt kit = £117.99

    £155 = mazda belt plus labour
    £295 = aftermarket kit plus labour
    Difference = £140
    Price of COMPLETE aftermarket kit = £117.99

    So how is the difference justified? An extra £140 for 3 pullies/bearings?

    I think £155 is a great price compared to many quotes though. I would try and replace all you afford - pullies, waterpump, maybe the tensioner too.

    Otherwise get learning some DIY, it's not that bad to do in the car. Just a bit tight in there! What miles are on the car anyway?

  • They have quoted the labour very low TBH.

    I bet it'll take them a few more hours than that.

  • Just had timing belt (only) fitted for £140 inc labour.

  • That's very decent. I suppose I'd do it for £140 for cash in the pocket. Pity no one owns mx-3s here!

  • That is very good indeed. Unusual for a main dealer.

  • It was an independent garage.

    Sorry don't know if i made it clear but the £295 was including labour and VAT.
