1.6 - 1.8 swap

  • hej guys, im new here. Wasnt sure which part of the forum this belonged in…

I have a Mx-3 1.8 v6, but its in very bad shape, the chassis has rusted right through at the back and some other stuff at the back is compleatly beyond repair.

I have seen people speak about difficultys with swaping the 1.6's to a v6 due to mounts and things, but with the v6 car as a donor would it make things simple?

Ive been offered a 1.6 for real cheap off a relative, and hoped to be able to use its shell for my old engine?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • It will need a massive amount of work still.

ECU and all the wiring, loads of things. Time and money.

I'd look for a V6 with knackered engine but ok body instead.

  • I 2nd that Mr Roc

  • ah ok thanks, say i did go down the long route? would i not just simply swap the ecu over?

    The wiring is different.

This is a conversion that people just don't do really. A massive job.

Get a better bodied 1.8 instead.

  • @8b4d03926e:

V6 radiator, power steering rack, brake master cylinder & booster & proportioning valve & driver's side hard brake line from proportioning valve to front driver's side caliper & complete rear cross-member with disk brake assemblies, and front harness.

Plus basically all the front subframe plus all the front wiring harnesses with the fusebox etc. It's a hefty job but not impossible, if you have lots of time and a decent place to work on it go for it!

Pretty massive task, much easier to buy a V6, it'd need to be a super mint 1.6. In which case I'd put a bp in it and go turbo.

  • If you have money to spend, cut your losses now and find a nice v6, then buy a klze and put that in….... very fun!!!!!

  • hej, thanks for your replies, after alot of thought i have decided to get a 1.6 and eventualy upgrade to bpt.
    Thanks for your help

  • Nice one, you left the T of the end ;)

lol thanks, was typeing on my phone at the time :p

  • what you ganna do with the v6?

  • i dont know now, probably break.. the bodywork is fine on the outside just underneith if proper fucked.. engine is fine and other stuff…

if i need parts like body and interior ill take them when i get the 1.6, then i dont know what ill do with the rest. the cars to rusty under to think about putting back on the road

  • ive got a v6 whith a good body but its got a blown engine so im after an engine how much would you want for yours if you are selling please??

  • ill get back to you on that one. gonna have to check everythings in order and what not.

and see how much its worth ofc ;)

btw im in cornwall so its quite a treck down from matlock

  • thanks im looking to do the engine ealy next year so theres no rush if you are willing to pull the engine out and its got low mileage i would be interested but if that isnt possible then no wurries.
    thanks
    jay :) :) :)

Thats pretty good, did you manage to get any pics of the swap?

  • Yeah, got any pics?

I guess you have to swap over all the under dash wiring? Remove the Heater? and dash?

    Change the Clocks?

Are the brakes the same on a 1.6?
