Shuddering and low idle

  • Okay, I only seem to get this when the car has about 1/4 or less in the petrol tank but the car shudders and feels like it's anout to die on me and is unresponsive until I get over 30-40.

    I have a few thoughts:

Dirty fuel lines or fuel injectors?
The air flow meter is bolloxed?
    The Cat is bummed?
    Needs new spark plugs?

As I say it's only below 30-40 and is idling at around 500.

    Anyone have any similar problems?

  • When was it last serviced mate?

First thing I would look at would be the acordian intake pipe, check for splits. If you do find any wrap it in duck tape, or just wrap it up anyway cos if it hasn't split, it will eventually!
Then if not done recently change the fuel filter.
Check the sparkplugs, condition and colour
    Check HT leads for splits
The car normally refuses to tick over if the airflow meter is fubar'd
Could be the disty on the way out (comon problem with the ignitor due to heat)
Cat could be clogged, give it a shake if you can, if it rattles like a baby's toy then the honey combe inside has broken down and needs to be replaced.
Run some redex through it, that should sort out dirty injectors or fuel lines.

    Good luck!

  • Cheers

I don't know when the car was last serviced I am getting it done next month though.

I think the problem may well have been the HT leads and spark plugs. I've had them out and cleaned all the connections and it seems to be running fine on start up at the moment. I'll see how it goes later on after taking it to work and back

  • HT leads break down after a few years, they are best replaced every 3 or 4 years or so.
