Ticking clutch?

  • Okay so I have this ticking noise that started a couple of days ago, I've managed to isolate the problem to be something to do with the clutch, weather it's the cable, the peddle, or the actual clucth I don't know but what I DO know is every time I depress the clutch, the clicking stops, I video'd it so that you could hear the sound.

Any idea's as to what's causing it?

You can hear it better towards the end, and ignore the work clothes :p lol

  • difficult one that fella i can hear it just.. but ?????

  • Yeah the video capture/mic on my phone sucks lol
I can't think for the life of me what it could be, it doesn't happen when the car's stationary, or when the clutch is depressed, just when the car's in motion, and it's annoying as hell :(

  • I would hazard a guess that its a knackered realease bearing?!

  • Is that a hard job to fix?
I hope not, I only had the car 5 days lol

  • well if it is that then it would mean taking the gearbox off to get to it.

That's what I'd say, and yes the box will have to come out. Makes sense to change the whole clutch while you're there. It also comes part of the clutch kit.

It's not going to be life threathening to the car at the mo, so you'll have some time to save for the clutch.

I've had noisy ones on cars before and driven them for a while. Never had one 'go' on me to the piont where it's undrivable. Just bloody noisy

  • I had the exact same with my red one a few years ago, it starts out very quiet and then it gets slightly louder then bang its gone and its just metal on metal grinding and screaming everytime you put the clutch in.
It is the thrust bearing in the clutch starting to break down and may not be long til it goes big time, when mine went I lasted about 20miles before towing her home.
You will need a full new clutch fitting.
If you are doing it yourself then the easiest way is remove the engine + gearbox in one hit, just need an engine hoist to do it and while its out you might as well do the cambelt as that takes 10 minutes when its out of the car.
I took a weekend at about 14 hours to do it alone.

That's not what I wanted to hear, I have to pick my girlfriend up from the airport tonight and that's a 40 mile round trip :(

Any good clutches anyone can recommend? May as well start on the upgrades now lol

  • most seem to upgrade to SPEC (stage) clutch
    http://treperformance.com/c-173-clutch-flywheel.html

will cost you more than double (ish) OEM clutch though…

  • Do not take my word for it it may be something else but its very similar but get it checked before commiting yourself

Yeah that isn't gonna be cheap to upgrade, maybe I'll leave that one for when I actually need a better clutch than oem :p

I have been driving it for a bit, and it doesn't make it all the time, so it's intermittent, but I'll get it checked by a mechanic I know and see what he says, thanks for the help though :)
