6 speed box for mx3

  • is there a six speed gear box which will fit on the 1.8 v6

as motorway trips are quiet greedy on the old petrol gauge

so there's no trip up here…. i'm woundering if the is a 6 speed gear box, i.e 6 forward gears and 1 reverse, dont mean to insult your intelligence...however i searched a part finder on the internet, clicked on a six speed gear box for my mx3, and they got back to me, a 6 speed box for £150 just as i was gonna buy it, the bloke said is it a 7 speed box your looking for, i thought WTF that would be awesome....(could proberbly drive down the motorway on idle) lol any way he thought i wanted 5 fwd gears and 1 reverse equalling 6...

cheers guys look forward to replies

  • There is nothing like that available as far as I am aware.

Think that the MX-3 came out nearly 20 years ago now, such things weren't around at all, coupled with how few MX-3s are now left, there wouldn't be a large enough market for someone to make it.

  • There are no 6 speeds available. Best thing you can do is swap a 5th from a taller gear box from certain types of escort/protege/626 IIRC. I've got a .717 on the way to replace my stock .795. Should drop revs about 300-350rpm, which is nice but not completely out of the engine's natural powerband. It's easy enough to swap in too as the 5th gear set sits under the black cover on the end of the tranny, just 2 locknuts in the way.

Aside from that you could swap in a 626 gearbox which also has a taller final drive, probably the easiest way to lower your 5th revs, but will make all gears taller.

BUT… remember we share the same tranny as the ford probe, 626, mx6, 323F v6, xedos 9... etc. Not to mention swappable gears from 323 gtx, escort, kia sephia etc. And so there is an interest to develop parts.

So here's this crazy master engineer from USA, he's making the F40 6 speed gearbox mate to his probe. These boxes handle corvette v8 power. He's making good progress. But this won't be cheap!

  • Good find Marc, very interesting read about gearboxes. Wonder if the thing will hold together once he's welded the Mazda bell housing to the GM box.

One thing I did notice though, probably just me being picky  he kept calling the Mazda box the MTX75 :? Now I know that our G series and the Ford MTX75 are essentially the same, same inards and what not, but I thought the bell housings were different? Or is he trying to confuse us!

I've often wondered if the MTX75 and our G series were the same. It'll open up loads of options to us MX owners if the bellhousing match.

I've often thought about using the MTX75 4x4 box from and Escort RS 2000 or Mondeo and converting an MX-3 to all wheel drive, I wonder if it could be done. Other option could be to take the transfer box off the MTX75 along with its guts, and stick it all in a G series case and try to get the transferbox to mate up??? Just thinking out loud now :D

Other option if they match would be to use the new Ford 6 speed boxes, say from the Focus ST170. Could be an option for a 6 speed MX-3!

  • After a quick read it seems that despite the same naming they are generally not interchangeable :( FWD escort gears seem to be compatible though.

The way that's been done 2/3 times for AWD mx-3 is to take everything from 323 GTRs. My objection to that is they share the same glass gearbox!

If the above mentioned gearbox fits an MX3 then you could also use a sierra rwd box prop and final drive as this bolts up to later ford tec's engine.

  • The MX-6 box has a taller 5th gear, but thats about it.

The only downside to the mx-3 (especially my ZE) is the MPG.

  • haha yea I'm on about 28mpg on my ZE. Though all my journeys are <12miles and the probinator chip I run is far too rich. Thinking about it though it's ok for a 2.5 engine. Think of the rx8s

From what I can remember is the bell housing is removable on these boxes too, so it should be easier to get something fabbed up to fit…. again it's all about how much your wallet will let you do

From what I've been reading the ST170 box won't fit, its called a Getrag MT285, it has the same bolt pattern as the MTX75 fitted to all the later zetec engines. Makes it a direct swap for Fords, but that's no good to us! :x

However, the new gearboxes found on the new duratec engines (not sure of the name) have a Mazda bolt pattern :D makes sense as the duratec is basicly a Mazda engine! Dunno if it's the same bolt pattern as ours but could be worth looking into. Hard to find any info on them at the mo, but apparently the one to be looking for is the 6 speed of the diesels.

  • my probinator chip runs way too rich too.

Some of the KIA gearboxes do fit the MX3, but only the 1.6 as far as I know.

    Yeah i know that feeling i average 21mpg. :(

  • Haha maybe mines not so bad then I'm getting 27mpg+

  • I'm about 21 mpg also, but you can smell its running rich.

Need to go megasquirt and get it mapped really.

  • ha ha my 1.8 v6 has just had the cat back on, and for some reason it feels a hell of alot quicker, plus i filled up and i got 100 miles to a quarter of a tank… now thats fu***ng awesome, its like a turbo diesel lol
