Engine swaps? i dont understand but i am new

  • @bb6c52c87e=james:

well being a Xedos 9 with the full millenia 2.5 its best to use the k8 chiped coz of the veris valves in the inlet there 3 difrent inlets short neck long neck ans the millenia curv neck
i think the long neck goes with a kl31 ecu
and the short with a kl01 ecu
but the curv neck it more like the k8 inlet so use the k8 chiped ecu

    i get you mate,
im just going to what evers cheapest with least miles and most serviced when i do,what chip are you going for?
    thanks

ps should have a shout box like msn on here

  • Just make sure you get a KLZE (from Japan only) not the KLDE that came in the MX-6 or Probe over here.

    Bare Minimum

    • Engine will set you back £450 inc delivery from Nippon Spares
    • Probinator Chip for ECU £25 (if running curved neck manifold)
    • KL31 or KL36 ECU £50 - £100 (if running straight neck manifold)

I would get these done while you have the engine out

    • Cam Belt
    • Standard Clutch Kit £130 Performance Clutch £200+

Upgrades that compliment the engine swap

    • Airfilter £20 - £100 ( do yourself a favour here and buy a K&N )

    • Stainless Cat Back exhaust £300

    • Stainless Manifolds and downpipe £150

    • Stainless Decat £30

    • Underdrive pulley £35

    • Auxillery belt for Underdrive pulley £20

Thats assuming the engine you get is in top condition and you don't have to re-build it

    • Head gasket set £80
    • Head bolts £50
    • Valve spring compressor £30
    • Valve grind kit and paste £20
    • Thermostat £7.5

Then you have to service it

    • Oil filter £3
    • Fully Synthetic 5W 30 Oil £10 - £15
    • Gearbox oil £20
    • Fuel filter £2.5
    • Power steering Fluid £10 - £15

Then there is labour costs if your not doing it yourself

    • Your looking at £250 - £500 to get a small garage to do the swap for you

    I would then…

    • look at upgrading your brake pads to EBC greenstuff £55 or something like a Mintex 1144 £65

  • @b9d8306477=ukmx3admin:

    Fuel filter £2.5

Tell me were you get your fuel filter please, mine cost a bomb?

  • Mechanic,

Does your 1.8 gearbox not screem with the 2.5 bolted on? It will only do 135mph in 5th a 7000rpm..

  • It does struggle a bit, i have a spare K8 gerabox that i am gonna play with.
My KLZE rev's to 8000 rpm, i dont hold it in that band but when i need to get moving i do use it.

  • I guess that give you a theoricial top speed on the limiter at 154 mph on standard 15" mx3 alloys? Im surprised the gearbox and clutch can handle the torque…!!

Makes me want to replace my engine! I must affect the handling though with that extra nose weight?

  • I have a stage 1 exedy clutch, a little heavy but doesnt slip.

  • @4d09ae790a=pdtrewern:

It must affect the handling though with that extra nose weight?

It's 6lbs heavier than 1.8 ;) Replace the stock exhaust with ebay headers and you've probably less weight over front, so don't worry about that!

  • possibly yess with the theoretical top speed, but i saaw 157.8 on gps down hanger straight in min
bearing in mind i have 2 fiberglass buckets and a roll cage and a relocated battery and had virtually nothing in the tank, but… personally i rekon she had more
i run an mx6 box with a "3" flywheel in mine though, only difference with the 6's box is it has a longer 5th... possibly the reason??

  • yea think the mx6/626 box has taller final gear, meaning all gears are longer, but also a longer 5th. I can never remember that correctly though  But that's some speed, well done! And legal :D

  • yep that's the reason you could reach that speed…

normal mx-3 tranny wouldn't go that high with the gearing...

  • With standard MX3 tranny i got 145mph on the GPS at just over 8000 revs.

your cars pretty fucked up with the jdm ecu :D

    japs always get it right.
